Salim (may Allah have mercy on him) said: Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) used to rent out his land; then he learned that Sayyiduna Rafi' bin Khadij al-Ansari (may Allah be pleased with him) forbade renting out land. Sayyiduna Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with them both) met Sayyiduna Rafi' (may Allah be pleased with him) and asked: O Ibn Khadij! What do you narrate from the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) about renting out land? Sayyiduna Rafi' (may Allah be pleased with him) said: I heard my two paternal uncles, both of whom were Companions who fought at Badr, narrating to the people of the household that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) "forbade renting out land." Sayyiduna Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with them both) said: By Allah! I know that in the time of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) land used to be rented out. Then Sayyiduna Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with them both) feared that perhaps the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) had said something on a particular matter of which Sayyiduna Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with them both) had not learned, so he too gave up renting out land.

Imam al-Zuhri (may Allah have mercy on him) asked Salim bin Abdullah (may Allah have mercy on him) about renting out land, and Salim (may Allah have mercy on him) replied that Sayyiduna Rafi' bin Khadij (may Allah be pleased with him) had informed Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both), on the authority of his two paternal uncles who had fought at Badr, that "the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) forbade it", so Sayyiduna Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with them both) gave up renting it out, though he used to rent it out before. Al-Zuhri (may Allah have mercy on him) asked Salim (may Allah have mercy on him): Do you rent it out? He said: Yes, and Sayyiduna Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with them both) also used to rent it out. I said: Then what about the hadith of Sayyiduna Rafi' (may Allah be pleased with him)? Salim (may Allah have mercy on him) said: Rafi' (may Allah be pleased with him) went too far against himself.
