Allah Almighty says: "Then if they suckle (the child) for you, give them their wages." [Surah al-Talaq: 6]
Thus Allah Almighty permitted ijarah (a hire contract) for suckling.
And He said: "One of the two women said: O my father, hire him; indeed the best one you can hire is the strong, the trustworthy." [Surah al-Qasas: 26] to the end of the story.
Imam al-Shafi'i (may Allah have mercy on him) said: "So Allah Almighty mentioned that one of His prophets hired himself out for a fixed number of years, in return for which he gained the right to marry a woman; this indicates the permissibility of ijarah."
He said: "And it has been said that he hired him on the condition that he would herd (goats) for him, and Allah knows best."

It is reported from Sayyiduna Umar bin al-Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him) concerning this story that the father of those (women) (Shu'ayb, may Allah have mercy on him) asked: "How do you know of his strength and his trustworthiness?" She said: "As for his strength, he lifted by himself the stone that only ten men could lift; and as for his trustworthiness, it is his saying: 'Walk behind me and describe the way to me,' so that the wind would not reveal your body to me."

In one narration the words are: That increased his desire for him, and Shu'ayb (peace be upon him) said: "I intend to marry you to one of these two daughters of mine on the condition that you work for me for eight years; then if you complete ten, that is from you, and I do not intend to be hard on you. If Allah wills, you will find me among the righteous." [Surah al-Qasas: 27] meaning, good in companionship and in fulfilling what I have said. Musa (peace be upon him) said: "That is between me and you; whichever of the two terms I complete, there will be no injustice against me." [Surah al-Qasas: 28] He said: Yes. "And Allah is Guardian over what we say." [Surah al-Qasas: 28] So he (Shu'ayb, peace be upon him) married his daughter to him, and he stayed with him and worked looking after his goats.

It is narrated from Sa'id bin Jubayr (may Allah have mercy on him) that a man from the Jews of the people of al-Hirah met me and asked me: Which of the two terms did Musa (peace be upon him) complete? I said: I do not know; tomorrow I will go to Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both). So I went to him and asked him, and he replied that Musa (peace be upon him) completed the term that was the longer and the purer. I informed the Jew, and he said: That companion of yours is a scholar.

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Three men were walking when the rain overtook them. They took shelter in a cave in a mountain. Meanwhile a rock fell from the mountain and covered the mouth of the cave. They said to one another: 'Recall your best deeds and call upon Allah by them, so that because of them He may remove the rock from you.' One of them said: 'O Allah, my parents were elderly, and I also had a wife and children. I used to herd goats to provide for them. When I returned in the evening, I would give milk to my parents first of all. One day I went far off in search of trees, and when I returned they had both fallen asleep. I cleaned the vessel and milked into it. Then I stood with the milk at my parents' heads while my children were crying at my feet. I disliked to begin with them before my parents, and I disliked to wake them from their sleep. I kept standing until dawn broke. O Allah, You surely know that I did this only for Your pleasure, so remove this rock from us so that we may see the sky.' The rock moved and they saw the sky. The second said: 'O Allah, I had a cousin (my paternal uncle's daughter) whom I loved; she was the dearest of all people to me. I asked her to commit sin with me, and she said: "First bring me a hundred dinars." I strove and gathered a hundred dinars, then came to her. When I sat between her legs, she said: "Fear Allah, and do not break the seal except by its right (through marriage)." So I got up. O Allah, You know that I did this for Your pleasure, so remove this rock from us.' It moved a little more. The third said: 'O Allah, I hired a labourer for a faraq (a measure) of millet. When he finished his work, I offered him his wage, but he refused to take it and turned away from it. I kept working with that wage of his until I gathered from it cows and their herdsmen. That man came and said: "Fear Allah, give me my right and do not wrong me." I said: "Go and take these cows and their herdsmen." He said: "Fear Allah and do not mock me." I said: "I am not mocking you; go and take these cows and their herdsmen." He took them away. O Allah, You know that I did this for Your pleasure, so remove the rest of the rock as well.' Allah Almighty removed that rock too; then they came out and walked on."

It is narrated from Sayyidah Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) and Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) hired a man from Banu al-Dil, and then of Banu Abbad, as an expert guide; 'al-khirrit' means one skilled in guiding. He had dipped his hand in a pact of alliance with the family of al-As bin Wa'il, and he was on the religion of the disbelievers of Quraysh, yet the two of them trusted him. They handed him their two mounts and arranged with him to meet at the cave of Thawr after three nights. So he came to them with their mounts on the morning after the third night, and the two of them set off, and Amir bin Fuhayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) and the guide from al-Dil went with them. This guide took the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) along the coast.

So the Christians worked. Then he said: 'Who will do this work from midday until Asr for one qirat?' The Jews did this work. Then he said: 'Who will work from Asr until Maghrib for two qirats?' And it was you who worked. The Jews and Christians became angry and said: 'Why is it that we do more work and receive less wage?' The man said: 'Have I given you less than your due?' They said: 'No.' Then he said: 'That is my bounty; I give it to whomever I will.'"

The people of the Torah were given the Torah, and they acted upon it until midday; then they became unable, so they were given one qirat each. The people of the Injil were given the Injil, and they acted upon it until the Asr prayer; then they became unable, so they were given one qirat each. Then you were given the Qur'an, and you acted upon it until Maghrib, so you were given two qirats each. Sayyiduna Abu Musa (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him): "The example of the Muslims, the Jews and the Christians is like that of a man who hired some labourers to work from morning until night for a fixed wage. They worked until midday, then said: 'We have no need of your wage that you stipulated, and what we have worked is void.' He said to them: 'Do not do this; work the rest of the day, then take your full wage.' But they refused and left it. He hired other people and said: 'Work the rest of the day, and you will have what I stipulated.' So they worked until the time of Asr, then said: 'What we have worked is void, and the wage you fixed for us is yours; we have no need of it.' He said to them: 'Work the rest of the day; only a little of the day remains, and take your wage.' They refused. The man hired another group, and they worked the rest of the day until, when Maghrib came, they took in full the wage of the first two groups. This is the example of the Jews and Christians, who abandoned what Allah had commanded them, and the example of the Muslims, who accepted the guidance of Allah and what the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) brought."

It is reported from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) faced some hardship. Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) came to know of it, and he went out looking for work so that he could bring something to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). He came to the garden of a Jew and drew seventeen buckets of water for him, with a date for each bucket. The Jew gave him seventeen Ajwah dates, and he brought them to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "O Abu al-Hasan, where have you brought these from?" He said: I learned that you were in hardship, O Prophet of Allah, so I went out and looked for work so that I could bring food for you (peace and blessings be upon him). He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Was it the love of Allah and His Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) that moved you to this?" Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) said: Yes, O Messenger of Allah. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Whoever loves Allah and His Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him), poverty comes to him faster than a flowing flood. Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) mentioned that he passed by an Ansari woman, and there was clay in front of her door. I said: Do you intend to have it kneaded? She said: Yes. I stipulated that she give a date for every bucket. I kneaded that clay for her, and she gave me sixteen dates, and I brought them to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). It is also narrated from Sayyidah Fatimah (may Allah be pleased with her) that Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) watered the garden of a Jew and took a date for each bucket.
