Nafi' (may Allah have mercy on him) said that Ubaydullah bin Abdullah (may Allah have mercy on him) and Salim bin Abdullah (may Allah have mercy on him) informed him that they both spoke to Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) when the army came against Sayyiduna Ibn al-Zubayr (may Allah be pleased with him), before he was killed. They both said: It will not harm you if you do not perform Hajj this year, for we fear that something will be put between you and the House. Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "We set out with the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), and the disbelievers of Quraysh blocked (the way to) the House, so the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) slaughtered his sacrifice and shaved his head. I call you to witness that I have made Umrah obligatory upon myself. If Allah wills, I will set off; if the way between me and the House is left open, I will perform tawaf, and if something comes between me and it, then I will do as the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) did, and I was with him (peace and blessings be upon him)." Then he entered ihram for Umrah at Dhu al-Hulayfah, travelled for a while and said: "The matter of these two (Hajj and Umrah) is one and the same; I call you to witness that I have made Hajj obligatory along with my Umrah." Then he did not exit ihram from either of them until he exited on the day of sacrifice, and he offered a sacrifice. He used to say: "Whoever combines Hajj and Umrah and enters ihram for both together does not exit ihram until he exits from both together on the day of sacrifice; he performs a single tawaf for both, and the sa'y between Safa and Marwah, on the day he enters Makkah."
(b) His words "on the day he enters Makkah, he returns to Safa and Marwah" mean, and Allah knows best, that a single sa'y between Safa and Marwah on the day he enters Makkah, after the tawaf of arrival (tawaf al-qudum), suffices him for both; then the second release from ihram is not attained except by the tawaf of the House on the day of sacrifice, and Allah knows best.
(c) In all the other narrations from Nafi', it is Abdullah bin Abdullah and Salim who spoke to him, and (the name) Abdullah is more correct.

Nafi' narrates from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) set out for Umrah, and the polytheists of Makkah came between him (peace and blessings be upon him) and the House. He (peace and blessings be upon him) slaughtered his sacrifice and shaved his head at al-Hudaybiyah. It was settled that he (peace and blessings be upon him) would perform Umrah the following year, but would not bring weapons, and would stay only as long as they (the disbelievers) wished. He (peace and blessings be upon him) performed Umrah the following year as had been agreed in the truce with them. When he had stayed there for three days, they said: Now leave; so he (peace and blessings be upon him) left.

Shayban narrates from Qatadah concerning the saying of Allah Almighty: "That Allah may forgive you what preceded of your sin and what will follow, and complete His favour upon you and guide you on a straight path." [Surah al-Fath: 2]
Sayyiduna Anas bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him) said that this verse was revealed on the return from al-Hudaybiyah, while his (peace and blessings be upon him) Companions (may Allah be pleased with them) were in grief and sorrow, because they had been prevented from their rites and had slaughtered their sacrifices at al-Hudaybiyah. When this verse was revealed, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "A verse has been revealed to me that is dearer to me than the whole world." He (peace and blessings be upon him) recited this verse to his Companions (may Allah be pleased with them). They said: Congratulations to you, O Prophet of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him)! Allah has made clear what He will do with you; so what will He do with us? Then Allah, Mighty and Majestic, revealed this verse about that: "That He may admit the believing men and the believing women into gardens beneath which rivers flow." [Surah al-Fath: 5]

Mujahid (may Allah have mercy on him) said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) performed three Umrahs, all of them in Dhu al-Qa'dah. Among them is the Umrah in which the sacrificial animals were prevented; the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) sent messages to the people of Makkah, and they made peace with him on the condition that he would turn back from them that year. He said: So the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) slaughtered the sacrificial animals at al-Hudaybiyah, where he had camped by the tree, and then went back.

Abu Umays (may Allah have mercy on him) said: I heard Ata say: The camping place of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) at al-Hudaybiyah was in al-Harrah, and there he (peace and blessings be upon him) slaughtered the sacrificial animals.
Imam al-Shafi'i (may Allah have mercy on him) said: We hold that he (peace and blessings be upon him) slaughtered in the Hill (outside the sanctuary) only because Allah Almighty says: "They are the ones who disbelieved and barred you from al-Masjid al-Haram, and (barred) the sacrificial animals, held back from reaching their place of sacrifice." [Surah al-Fath: 25] And according to the people of knowledge, the whole Haram is the place of sacrifice. Imam al-Shafi'i (may Allah have mercy on him) said: Al-Hudaybiyah is a place, part of which lies in the Hill and part in the Haram; in our view the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) slaughtered in the Hill, and there is the mosque of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) where the pledge was given beneath the tree, and Allah Almighty revealed: "Allah was certainly pleased with the believers when they pledged allegiance to you beneath the tree." [Surah al-Fath: 18] And concerning: "And do not shave your heads until the sacrificial animal reaches its place." [Surah al-Baqarah: 196] he said: Its place here, and Allah knows best, seems to be that when one is prevented, he slaughters where he is prevented, and without being prevented the place of sacrifice is the Haram and the place of slaughter; and this is broad Arabic usage. [Sahih]
Al-Shaykh (al-Bayhaqi) (may Allah have mercy on him) said: Something has been narrated from Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him) that indicates the correctness of this.

Abu Asma', the freed slave of Abdullah bin Ja'far (may Allah be pleased with him), related that he was with Abdullah bin Ja'far (may Allah be pleased with him) and set out with him from Madinah. They passed by Sayyiduna Husayn bin Ali (may Allah be pleased with him), who was ill at al-Suqya. Abdullah bin Ja'far (may Allah be pleased with him) stayed with him until, when he feared missing (the Hajj), he left, and sent word to Sayyiduna Ali bin Abi Talib and Sayyidah Asma' bint Umays (may Allah be pleased with them both), who were in Madinah at that time, and they both came to him. Then Sayyiduna Husayn (may Allah be pleased with him) pointed to his head, so Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) ordered that his head be shaved; then he offered a sacrifice on his behalf at al-Suqya, slaughtering a camel for him. Yahya said: Sayyiduna Husayn (may Allah be pleased with him) had set out with Sayyiduna Uthman bin Affan (may Allah be pleased with him) on that journey of his.
