Sayyiduna Anas bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him) said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) used to mix with us, to the extent that he would say to a younger brother of mine: "O Abu Umayr, what did the little bird (nughayr) do?" meaning a bird he had.

Sayyiduna Anas bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him) said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) was the best of people in character. I had a brother called Abu Umayr, who was newly weaned. Whenever he (peace and blessings be upon him) came, he would say: "O Abu Umayr, what did the little bird do?" He used to play with it. Sometimes the time of prayer would come while he (peace and blessings be upon him) was in our house, and he would order the mat beneath him to be swept and sprinkled with water. Then he would stand, we would stand behind him, and he would lead us in prayer.

Sayyiduna Anas bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him) said: Sayyidah Umm Sulaym (may Allah be pleased with her) had a son called Abu Umayr. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) would sometimes joke with him when he visited Umm Sulaym (may Allah be pleased with her). One day he came and found him sad. He (peace and blessings be upon him) asked: "Why is Abu Umayr sad?" They said: O Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), his little bird that he used to play with has died. So the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) began to say: "O Abu Umayr, what did the little bird do?"

Ata (may Allah have mercy on him) said that a bird or a gazelle was given as a gift to Sayyidah Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her) in the sanctuary, and she let it go. On that day Hisham (may Allah have mercy on him) said: Ibn Abi Rabah does not know (this): the Commander of the Believers, Sayyiduna Abdullah bin al-Zubayr (may Allah be pleased with them both), was in Makkah for nine years, and the Companions of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) would come and see them in cages, larks and partridges.
