Sayyiduna Abu Qatadah al-Ansari (may Allah be pleased with him) says that he was with the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) on one of the roads to Makkah. He stayed behind with some companions of his who were in ihram, while he himself was not in ihram. He saw a wild ass, settled firmly on his horse, and asked his companions to hand him his whip, but they refused. He asked for his spear, and again they refused. Then Sayyiduna Abu Qatadah (may Allah be pleased with him) took his spear himself and rode, chased the wild ass and killed it. Some of the Companions (may Allah be pleased with them) ate from it and some refused to eat. When they came to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), they asked him (peace and blessings be upon him) about it, and he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "It is but food that Allah, the Lord of Might, has fed you."

Ata bin Yasar (may Allah have mercy on him) narrates from Sayyiduna Abu Qatadah (may Allah be pleased with him) about the wild ass, like the hadith of Abu al-Nadr, except that in the hadith of Zayd, the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Do you have any of its meat with you?"

Abu Muhammad says that he heard Sayyiduna Abu Qatadah (may Allah be pleased with him) saying: We set out with the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), and when we reached a place called al-Qahah, some of our companions were in the state of ihram and some were not. Suddenly I saw that my companions were looking at something; I looked too, and it was a wild donkey. I saddled my horse and mounted it, I took hold of my spear, and my whip fell. I said to my companions: Hand it to me — and they were in the state of ihram. They said: By Allah! We will not help you with it at all. I picked up my whip, then went after the donkey from behind, and it was behind a mound. I struck it with my spear and brought it down. I brought it to my companions; some of them said: Eat it, and some said: Do not eat it. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) was ahead of us; I spurred my horse on, caught up with the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) and asked him, and he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "It is lawful, so eat it."

Abdullah bin Abi Qatadah narrates from his father (may Allah be pleased with him) that he set out with the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) in the year of Hudaybiyah. My companions had entered ihram, while I was not in ihram. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) went on ahead, and I was with my companions. They were laughing at one another. I looked, and suddenly there was a wild donkey. I raised my spear and mounted my riding animal; I asked them for help, but they refused to help me. We ate, and we were also afraid. I raced my horse to reach the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), and in the middle of the night I met a man of the tribe of Ghifar. I said: Where did you leave the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him)? He said: At a place called "al-Suqya". Then I caught up with him (peace and blessings be upon him). I said: O Messenger of Allah! Your Companions (may Allah be pleased with them) send you greetings of peace, and they fear that they may come to harm without you (peace and blessings be upon him), so wait for them. I said: O Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him)! I caught a wild donkey, and some leftover meat of it is still with me. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said to the people: "Eat." And they were in the state of ihram.

Abdullah bin Abi Qatadah narrates from his father (may Allah be pleased with him) that he said: One day we were sitting with some of the Companions (may Allah be pleased with them) of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) on the road to Makkah, and the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) was ahead of us. The people were in the state of ihram and I was not in ihram. The people saw a wild donkey while I was busy mending my sandal. They did not tell me. Suddenly I saw it, so I got up and went to my horse, saddled it and mounted it, and I forgot my whip and my spear. I said to them: Hand me my whip and my spear. They said: We will not help you with it in any way. I dismounted, took them, and mounted again firmly. I killed it and dragged it back, and it was dead. They fell upon it, eating it. Then they had doubts about their eating it, because they were in the state of ihram. We set off, and I hid one of its forelegs with me. We caught up with the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and asked about it. He (peace and blessings be upon him) asked: "Do you have any of it with you?" I said: Yes. I gave him (peace and blessings be upon him) its foreleg and he (peace and blessings be upon him) ate it, although he (peace and blessings be upon him) was in the state of ihram, until he (peace and blessings be upon him) stripped the meat from the bone.

Mu'adh bin Abd al-Rahman al-Taymi (may Allah have mercy on him) narrates from his father that he said: We were with Talhah bin Ubaydullah (may Allah be pleased with him) on the road to Makkah, and we were in the state of ihram. They gave us some game meat as a gift while Talhah bin Ubaydullah (may Allah be pleased with him) was asleep. Some ate, and some did not eat, out of scrupulousness. When Talhah bin Ubaydullah (may Allah be pleased with him) woke up, he said to those who had eaten: You did right; and he said to those who had not eaten: You made a mistake, for we ate game meat with the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) while we were in the state of ihram.

Umayr bin Salamah narrates from a man of the tribe of Bahz that he (peace and blessings be upon him) set out, intending to go to Makkah. When he reached the valley of al-Rawha, the people saw a wounded wild donkey. They mentioned it to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), and he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Leave it; the one who wounded it will surely come." Then al-Bahzi came, the one who had wounded it. He said: O Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him)! This donkey is yours, do with it as you please. He (peace and blessings be upon him) commanded Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him), and he divided it among the companions, although they were in the state of ihram. Then we travelled on until we reached a place called al-Abwa. Suddenly there was a deer lying curled up in the shade of a tree, with an arrow in it. He (peace and blessings be upon him) ordered a man to stay beside it until the people had passed.
