Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) narrated a long hadith, in which it was also mentioned that when the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) reached Makkah, he said to the people: "Whoever has brought a sacrificial animal should not come out of the restriction of anything that has been made forbidden until he completes his Hajj; and whoever has no sacrificial animal should perform tawaf of the House of Allah and of Safa and Marwah, have his hair shortened and leave ihram; then he should say the talbiyah for Hajj and offer a sacrifice; and whoever does not find a sacrificial animal should fast three days during the days of Hajj and seven on returning home."

Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) was asked about tamattu' Hajj, and he said: The Muhajirun, the Ansar and the pure wives (may Allah be pleased with them) said the talbiyah on the occasion of the Farewell Hajj, and so did we. When we reached Makkah, the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Change the talbiyah of your Hajj into Umrah, except for the one who has brought a sacrificial animal." So we performed tawaf of the House of Allah and of Safa and Marwah, went to our women and put on our clothes. And he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Whoever has garlanded his sacrificial animal should not leave ihram until the sacrificial animal reaches its place." Then on the night of Tarwiyah he ordered us to say the talbiyah for Hajj. When we had finished the rites, we came and performed tawaf of the House of Allah and of Safa and Marwah, and our Hajj was complete, and a sacrifice was due from us, as Allah Almighty has said: "(Offer) whatever sacrificial animal is easily available; and whoever does not find one should fast three days during Hajj and seven when you return" [Surah al-Baqarah: 196], that is, to your cities; and a goat also suffices. So that year they did both, Hajj and Umrah. Indeed, Allah Almighty revealed this in His Book, and it is in the Sunnah of His Prophet as well, and it was made permissible for those other than the people of Makkah. Allah Almighty says: "That is for the one whose family is not present at al-Masjid al-Haram" [Surah al-Baqarah: 196]. And the months of Hajj that Allah Almighty has mentioned are Shawwal, Dhu al-Qa'dah and Dhu al-Hijjah; whoever performs tamattu' in these days must offer a sacrifice or fast. "Al-rafath" means sexual intercourse, "al-fusuq" means sins, and "al-jidal" means quarrelling.

Sayyiduna Jabir bin Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him) says, concerning the Hajj of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), his telling the people to perform Umrah and leave ihram, his sermon, and his saying: "If I had known beforehand what I came to know later, I would not have brought the sacrificial animal, and I would have left ihram like the people. So whoever has no sacrificial animal should fast three days during Hajj and seven days on returning home, and whoever has a sacrificial animal available should slaughter it": We used to slaughter one camel on behalf of seven persons. And he mentioned the whole hadith.

Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) said: Whoever performs Umrah in the months of Hajj, that is, Shawwal, Dhu al-Qa'dah and Dhu al-Hijjah, has become a mutamatti' (one performing tamattu'), and a sacrifice is obligatory on him; if he does not find one, he should fast.
In the previous chapter we have mentioned the statement of Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) concerning tamattu', that it is not complete unless he offers a sacrifice; if he has no sacrificial animal, he should fast: three fasts during Hajj and seven when he returns home. An Umrah outside the months of Hajj is complete without a sacrifice or fasting.
