Sayyidah Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her) said: We set out with the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) on the twenty-fifth of Dhu al-Qa'dah, intending nothing but Hajj. When we drew near to Makkah, the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) ordered those who had no sacrificial animal with them to come out of ihram after performing tawaf of the House and of Safa and Marwah. She said: On the Day of Sacrifice beef was brought to us, so I asked: "What is this?" It was said: "The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) has slaughtered on behalf of his pure wives."

Sayyidah Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her) said: We set out with the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), not mentioning either Hajj or Umrah. When we arrived, he (peace and blessings be upon him) ordered us to come out of ihram. Then on the night of departure Safiyyah bint Huyayy (may Allah be pleased with her) began her menses, and the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Shaven-headed and lame! It seems she will hold you back." He (peace and blessings be upon him) asked: "Did you perform tawaf on the Day of Sacrifice?" She said: Yes. So he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Then set out." Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her) said: O Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), I did not call the talbiyah for Umrah; (am I to be deprived)? He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Perform Umrah from al-Tan'im." So her brother went with her. Then he (peace and blessings be upon him) met us at night and said: "Your meeting place is such-and-such."
(b) In Sahih al-Bukhari it is narrated from the narrator Muhammad, and its wording is: "We set out with the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), calling the talbiyah for Hajj only."
(c) It is narrated from Sayyidah Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her); she said: We set out with the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), and we did not name Hajj or Umrah in our talbiyah.

Tawus (may Allah have mercy on him) said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) set out from Madinah without naming either Hajj or Umrah, and he kept awaiting the decision from Allah, until, while he (peace and blessings be upon him) was between Safa and Marwah, the decision was revealed to him. He (peace and blessings be upon him) ordered his companions that whoever had entered ihram for Hajj and had no sacrificial animal with him should make it an Umrah, and he said: "Had I known beforehand about this matter what I have come to know afterwards, I would not have brought the sacrificial animal. But I have matted my hair and brought my sacrificial animal, so there is no place of release for me other than the place of release of my sacrificial animal." Then Sayyiduna Suraqah bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him) stood up and said: "O Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), give us a decisive ruling, as though we were born today: is this Umrah of ours for this year only, or forever?" He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Rather, forever. Umrah has entered into Hajj until the Day of Resurrection." Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) came from Yemen, and the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) asked him: "What talbiyah did you call?" He replied: I called the same talbiyah as the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him).

Jabir bin Abdullah al-Ansari (may Allah be pleased with them both) said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) stayed in Madinah for nine years without performing Hajj. Then he had Hajj announced among the people, and a great many people gathered in Madinah. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) set out from Madinah when five days of Dhu al-Qa'dah still remained. When he reached Dhu al-Hulayfah he prayed, then mounted his riding animal, and when he reached al-Bayda' he called the talbiyah, and we intended nothing but Hajj.

Muhammad bin Ali bin Husayn (may Allah have mercy on him) said: We came to Jabir bin Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him), and he asked each of us who we were. When my turn came, I said: I am Muhammad bin Ali bin Husayn. He reached his hand towards my head, undid my upper button and my lower button, and placed his palm on my chest. In those days I was a young man. He said: "Welcome, O son of my brother! Ask whatever you wish." So I asked him, and he was blind. The time for prayer came, and he stood wrapped in his cloth; whenever he placed it on his shoulder, it slipped back down because it was small. Having hung his cloak to one side on a peg, he led us in prayer. Then I said: Tell us about the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). He made the knot for nine with his hand, then said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) remained for nine years without performing Hajj. Then in the tenth year he (peace and blessings be upon him) had Hajj announced, and a great many people gathered in Madinah so that they could follow the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) and do as he (peace and blessings be upon him) did. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) set out, and we set out with him, until we reached Dhu al-Hulayfah, where Asma' bint Umays (may Allah be pleased with her) gave birth to Muhammad bin Abi Bakr. She sent word to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) asking: What should I do? He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Take a ritual bath (ghusl), bind a cloth around yourself, and enter ihram." The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) prayed in the mosque, then mounted al-Qaswa', until his she-camel carried him up onto al-Bayda'.
Jabir (may Allah be pleased with him) said: As far as my eyes could see, I saw riders and people on foot in front of him, behind him, to his right and to his left, and the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) was among us; the Qur'an was being revealed to him and he knew its interpretation, so whatever he did, we did the same. Then he (peace and blessings be upon him) called the talbiyah of tawhid: 'Labbayka Allahumma labbayk, labbayka la sharika laka labbayk, inna al-hamda wa al-ni'mata laka wa al-mulk, la sharika lak' (Here I am, O Allah, here I am; here I am, You have no partner, here I am. Surely all praise and blessing are Yours, and the dominion too; You have no partner). The people called the same talbiyah that they call, and the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) did not reject any of it from them, and he kept to his own talbiyah. Jabir (may Allah be pleased with him) said: We intended only Hajj and did not even know of Umrah, until we reached the House. He (peace and blessings be upon him) touched the Corner, did raml in three circuits and walked in four, then went forward to the Station of Ibrahim and recited this verse: "And take the Station of Ibrahim as a place of prayer" [Surah al-Baqarah: 125]. He (peace and blessings be upon him) placed the Station between himself and the House. He said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) recited Surah al-Ikhlas and Surah al-Kafirun in the two rak'ahs. Then he came back to the House and touched the Corner. Then he went out through the gate towards Safa, and when he drew near to Safa he recited this verse: "Indeed, Safa and Marwah are among the symbols of Allah" [Surah al-Baqarah: 158].
"We begin with what Allah Almighty began with." So he (peace and blessings be upon him) began with Safa and climbed it until he could see the House, proclaimed the greatness of the One Allah, and said: 'La ilaha illallahu wahdahu la sharika lah, lahu al-mulku wa lahu al-hamd, yuhyi wa yumit, wa huwa 'ala kulli shay'in qadir, la ilaha illallahu wahdah, anjaza wa'dah, wa nasara 'abdah, wa hazama al-ahzaba wahdah' (There is no god but Allah, alone, without partner; His is the dominion and His is the praise; He gives life and causes death, and He has full power over all things. There is no god but Allah alone; He fulfilled His promise, helped His servant, and alone defeated the confederates). Then he made supplication in between that, and said the like three times. Then he came down and went to Marwah; when his feet sank down into the valley he did raml in the middle of the valley, and when he began to climb he walked at an easy pace until he reached Marwah, and on Marwah he did just as he had done on Safa. When it was the last circuit at Marwah, he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Had I known beforehand about this matter what I have come to know afterwards, I would not have brought the sacrificial animal with me and would have made it an Umrah. So whoever of you has no sacrificial animal, let him come out of ihram and make it an Umrah." So all the people came out of ihram and had their hair cut, except the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) and those who had sacrificial animals. Then Suraqah bin Ju'shum (may Allah be pleased with him) stood up and asked: O Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), is this for this year of ours, or forever? He (peace and blessings be upon him) interlaced the fingers of one hand with the fingers of the other, then said: "Umrah has entered into Hajj," saying it like this twice, "rather, forever and ever." He said: Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) came from Yemen with the sacrificial camels of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), and he found Fatimah (may Allah be pleased with her) among those who had come out of ihram; she had put on dyed clothes and applied kohl. Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) disapproved of this and said: Who told you to do this? She said: My father! And Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) used to say in Iraq: I went to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), angry with Fatimah (may Allah be pleased with her) over this matter, to ask his ruling about what she had done, and I told him that I had disapproved of all of it, and that she had said: My father told me to. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "She has spoken the truth. What did you say when you made Hajj obligatory upon yourself?" He said: I said: O Allah, I too enter ihram for that for which the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) has entered ihram. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Then I have the sacrificial animals with me, so do not come out of ihram." He said: All the sacrificial animals that he (peace and blessings be upon him) brought from Madinah and that Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) brought from Yemen numbered one hundred. So all the people came out of ihram and had their hair cut, but the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) and those who had sacrificial animals did not come out of ihram.
He said: When it was the Day of Tarwiyah and the people headed towards Mina, they called the talbiyah for Hajj. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) rode and prayed Zuhr, Asr, Maghrib, Isha and Fajr at Mina. Then he stayed a little while until the sun rose. He ordered his tent of hair, and it was pitched at Namirah. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) set off, and Quraysh had no doubt that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) would stop at al-Mash'ar al-Haram in Muzdalifah, as Quraysh used to do in the Jahiliyyah. But he (peace and blessings be upon him) passed on until he came to Arafah and found the tent pitched at Namirah, and he stayed there. When the sun had passed the meridian, he (peace and blessings be upon him) ordered al-Qaswa', and she was saddled. He (peace and blessings be upon him) rode her until he came to the middle of the valley, and he addressed the people, saying: "Your blood and your property are sacred to you, like the sanctity of this month, this city and this day. Beware! Everything of the Jahiliyyah is abolished beneath my feet. The blood-claims of the Jahiliyyah are abolished, and the first of our blood-claims that I abolish is the blood of Rabi'ah bin al-Harith bin Abd al-Muttalib, whom Hudhayl killed while he had been sent to Banu Sa'd to be nursed. The usury (riba) of the Jahiliyyah is abolished, and the first usury that I abolish is the usury of Abbas bin Abd al-Muttalib (may Allah be pleased with him); it is abolished, all of it, finished. Fear Allah regarding women, for you have taken them by the trust of Allah and made their private parts lawful by the word of Allah. It is their duty that they do not allow anyone whom you dislike onto your beds; if they do that, then strike them lightly. And upon you is their provision and clothing according to what is customary. I am leaving among you something after which you will never go astray if you hold firmly to it, and that is the Book of Allah. And you will be asked about me, so what will you say?" They said: We will bear witness that you have certainly conveyed, fulfilled (your duty) and given sincere counsel. Then he raised his index finger towards the sky, pointed towards the people and said: "O Allah, bear witness! O Allah, bear witness! O Allah, bear witness!" Then Bilal (may Allah be pleased with him) called the adhan and then the iqamah. He led the Zuhr prayer, then the iqamah was called and he led the Asr prayer. He prayed nothing between them. Then he rode al-Qaswa' until he came to the place of standing; he turned his she-camel al-Qaswa' towards the rocks, put Jabal al-Mushat in front of him and faced the qiblah, and he remained standing there until the sun set and some of the yellowness had gone. When the sun had disappeared, he seated Usamah (may Allah be pleased with him) behind him, and the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) set off. He pulled al-Qaswa''s rein tightly, so that her head almost touched the wooden frame of the saddle, and he was gesturing with his right hand, saying: "Calmly, O people! Calmly!" Whenever he came to a hillock, he loosened her rein until she climbed it, until he reached Muzdalifah. There he combined Maghrib and Isha with one adhan and two iqamahs, and he prayed nothing between them. Then he (peace and blessings be upon him) lay down until dawn broke, and he prayed Fajr when the morning became clear, with one adhan and one iqamah. Then he rode al-Qaswa' until he came to al-Mash'ar al-Haram and climbed it; facing the qiblah, he proclaimed Allah's greatness and oneness and praised Him, and he remained standing there until it became very bright. Then he departed from there before the sun rose, and he seated al-Fadl bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) behind him; he was a fair, handsome man with beautiful hair. When the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) set off, women were passing by, and al-Fadl began looking at them. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) placed his hand on al-Fadl's face, and al-Fadl turned his face to the other side; the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) turned his face to the other side, and al-Fadl turned his face to the other side again, until he reached the valley of Muhassir, where he urged his camel on a little. Then he took the middle road that leads to the Great Jamrah, until he came to the Jamrah near the tree and threw seven pebbles at it, saying the takbir with every pebble; he (peace and blessings be upon him) threw the pebbles from the middle of the valley. Then he went to the place of sacrifice and sacrificed sixty-three animals with his own hand, and he put Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) in charge of the remainder, so he slaughtered them, and he made him a partner in his sacrificial animals. Then he ordered that some meat be brought from each camel; it was put in a pot and cooked, and the two of them ate from that meat and drank from its broth. Then he went back and came to the House, prayed Zuhr in Makkah, and then came to Banu Abd al-Muttalib, who were giving water to drink. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said to them: "O Banu Abd al-Muttalib, draw water! Were it not for the fear that people would overpower you, I too would have drawn water along with you."
