Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) says: A man asked the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him): Who is the pilgrim? He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "The one dishevelled and covered in dust." Another stood up and asked: Which Hajj is best? He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "The one with raising of the voice (in the talbiyah) and the shedding of (sacrificial) blood." Another stood up and said: O Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), what is the "way" (al-sabil)? He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "A mount and provision for the journey."
This is what al-Shafi'i meant by his statement that among them is what the people of knowledge refrain from affirming; they refrained from it only because the hadith is known through Ibrahim bin Yazid al-Khuzi, and the scholars of hadith have declared him da'if (weak).

Yahya bin Ma'in said: Ibrahim bin Yazid al-Khuzi, who narrated this hadith of Muhammad bin Abbad, is not thiqah (trustworthy).
The Shaykh says: Muhammad bin Abdullah bin Ubayd bin Umayr narrates it from Muhammad bin Abbad, but he is weaker than Ibrahim bin Yazid. Likewise this narration was narrated by Muhammad bin al-Hajjaj, and he is matruk (abandoned). Likewise it has been narrated from Sa'id bin Abi Arubah and Hammad bin Salamah, from Qatadah, from Sayyiduna Anas (may Allah be pleased with him), from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), concerning provision and a mount, but in my view this is their error.

Hasan al-Basri (may Allah have mercy on him) says: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) was asked about the saying of Allah Almighty, "And Hajj to the House is a duty owed to Allah by the people, for whoever is able to find a way to it" [Surah Al Imran: 97]: what is the "way"? He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "A mount and provision for the journey."
The correct view is that this narration from Hasan (may Allah have mercy on him) is mursal.

The Mother of the Believers, Sayyidah Aishah Siddiqah (may Allah be pleased with her), says: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) was asked about "the way to Hajj" (al-sabil ila al-hajj), and he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Provision for the journey and a mount."
Other hadiths have been narrated on this, none of which is authentic. The hadith of Ibrahim bin Yazid is the best known of them, and we have supported it with what al-Hasan al-Basri narrated, even though it is munqati' (with a broken chain).

Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) says, concerning the saying of Allah Almighty, "And Hajj to the House is a duty owed to Allah by the people, for whoever is able to find a way to it" [Surah Al Imran: 97]: The "way" is that a person's body is healthy and that the money for provision and a mount is readily available to him.

It is also reported from Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both), like the saying of Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him), that the meaning of "way" (sabil) is provision for the journey and a mount.
