Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) says: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) addressed us and said: "O people! Hajj has been made obligatory upon you, so perform Hajj." A man said: "Every year?" He (peace and blessings be upon him) remained silent until the man had said it three times. Then the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Had I said yes, it (performing Hajj every year) would have become obligatory, and you would not have been able to do it." Then he said: "Leave me alone as long as I leave you alone. Indeed, those before you were destroyed because of their excessive questioning and their disagreeing with their prophets. So when I command you to do something, do of it as much as you are able, and when I forbid you from something, leave it."

Sayyiduna Jabir bin Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with them both) says: We, the Companions of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), made the talbiyah for Hajj alone (Hajj al-Ifrad). He mentioned the whole hadith, and in it he also said that Sayyiduna Suraqah bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him) said: O Messenger of Allah! Is this tamattu' of ours for this year only, or forever? He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "No, rather it is forever."

Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) says: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) addressed us and said: "O people! Allah has made Hajj obligatory upon you." Al-Aqra' bin Habis (may Allah be pleased with him) stood up and said: O Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him)! Every year (is Hajj obligatory)? He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "If I were to say so, it (performing Hajj every year) would become obligatory, and if it became obligatory you would not do it, nor would you be able to. Hajj is (obligatory) once; whoever does more, it is voluntary."
In the hadith of Sayyiduna Jabir bin Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with them both), Suraqah bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him) said: O Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him)!
