The Mother of the Believers, Sayyidah Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her), says: I said to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him): We too will go on military expeditions and jihad with you. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "But the best and most excellent jihad is an accepted Hajj (Hajj mabrur)." Sayyidah Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her) says: Since I have heard this from the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), I will never abandon Hajj.

Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) gave permission to the pure wives of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) (may Allah be pleased with them) to perform Hajj, and sent Uthman bin Affan and Abd al-Rahman bin Awf (may Allah be pleased with them both) with them. Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him) announced that no one should come near them, nor should anyone look at them except as far as the eye reaches, while they were riding in howdahs on camels. He settled them at the beginning of the mountain pass, and the two of them stayed at its far end, and no one sat near them.

The Shaykh says: The Hajj of Sayyidah Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her) and the other Mothers of the Believers (may Allah be pleased with them) after the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) indicates that what is meant by this report is that Hajj is obligatory upon them once, just as its obligation upon men once has been explained; it is not a prohibition of doing more than that. (And Allah knows best.)
