Ikrimah (may Allah have mercy on him) says: When this verse was revealed: "And whoever seeks a religion other than Islam, it will never be accepted from him" [Surah Al Imran: 85], the Jews said: We are Muslims. So they were proven wrong in their claim, that is, the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said to them: "Allah Almighty has made pilgrimage to the House obligatory upon the Muslims, for whoever is able to find a way to it." They said: "It is not obligatory upon us," and they refused to perform Hajj. So Allah Almighty said: "And whoever disbelieves, then indeed Allah is free of need of the worlds" [Surah Al Imran: 97]. Ikrimah (may Allah have mercy on him) said: Whoever from the people of the religions denies it, then Allah Almighty is free of need of the worlds.

Mujahid (may Allah have mercy on him) says: When this verse was revealed: "And whoever seeks a religion other than Islam" [Surah Al Imran: 85], the followers of all religions claimed to be Muslims. Then Allah Almighty revealed this verse: "Pilgrimage to the House is a duty upon people for the sake of Allah" [Surah Al Imran: 97]; so the Muslims performed Hajj and the polytheists did not.

Sayyiduna Umar bin al-Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him) says: We were sitting with the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) when a man appeared with extremely black hair and extremely white clothes. No trace of travel could be seen on him, and none of us knew him, until he sat down by the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), joined his knees to the knees of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), placed his hands on his thighs, and said: "O Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him)! Tell me about Islam: what is Islam?" The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Islam is that you bear witness that there is no deity except Allah and that Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) is His servant and Messenger, that you establish the prayer, give the zakah, fast in Ramadan, and perform Hajj to the House if you are able." The man said: You have spoken the truth. (He then mentioned the whole hadith.) Then he said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said to me: "O Umar! Do you know who the questioner was?" I said: Allah and His Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) know best. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "That was Jibril, who came to teach you your religion."

Sayyiduna Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) says: We had been forbidden from asking the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) about anything, and we would love for a man from the desert people to come and ask him while we listened. Then a man from among them came and said: O Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him)! Your messenger came to us and claimed that you (peace and blessings be upon him) claim that Allah Almighty has sent you (peace and blessings be upon him). He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Allah." He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Yes." He said: Your (peace and blessings be upon him) messenger has claimed that five prayers are obligatory upon us in our day and night. He said: Your messenger has claimed that pilgrimage to the House is obligatory upon whoever among us is able. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "He has spoken the truth." He said: By the One who made you a messenger, has Allah commanded you with this? He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Yes." Then he said: By the One who sent you with the truth, I will neither decrease from them nor add to them. When he left, he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "If he has spoken the truth, he will surely enter Paradise."
