Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) said that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Whoever would like his beloved to be made to wear a ring (bangle) of fire, let him make him wear a ring (bangle) of gold; whoever would like his beloved to be made to wear a necklace of fire, let him make him wear a necklace of gold; and whoever would like to make his dear one wear bracelets of fire, let him make him wear bracelets of gold. Rather, hold to silver for yourselves and take your enjoyment fully with it."

Sayyiduna Thawban (may Allah be pleased with him) said: The daughter of Hubayrah (may Allah be pleased with her) came to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), and on her hand were large gold rings. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) began striking her hand, so she went to Sayyidah Fatimah (may Allah be pleased with her) to complain. Sayyiduna Thawban (may Allah be pleased with him) said: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) also went to Sayyidah Fatimah (may Allah be pleased with her), and I was with him (peace and blessings be upon him). She had taken a gold chain from her neck and said: Abu al-Hasan (may Allah be pleased with him) gave me this as a gift; and the chain was in her hand. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Would it please you that people say: Fatimah, the daughter of Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him), has a chain of fire in her hand?" Then he (peace and blessings be upon him) went out and did not sit down. So Sayyidah Fatimah (may Allah be pleased with her) sold the chain, bought a slave with it, and set him free. This reached the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), and he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "All praise is for Allah, who has saved Fatimah (may Allah be pleased with her) from the Fire."

Zayd bin Abi Sallam narrated from his grandfather that Abu Asma' narrated to him that Sayyiduna Thawban (may Allah be pleased with him), the freed slave of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), said, and he narrated a hadith with the same meaning. All these reports, and those that have come with the same meaning, indicate that wearing gold jewelry is forbidden.
