Salim bin Abdullah narrates from his father (Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar, may Allah be pleased with them both) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Whatever is watered by the sky or by springs, or is rain-fed, a tenth is due on it; and whatever is watered by drawing water, half a tenth is due on it."

Nafi' narrates from Sayyiduna Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) that the zakah of fruits and crops is on what comes from date palms, grapes, wheat, barley and hull-less barley; whatever (produce) is watered by springs or a river, or is rain-fed and watered by the rain, a tenth is due on it, that is, one out of every ten; and whatever is watered by drawing water, half a tenth is due on it, that is, one out of every twenty. And the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) sent a letter to the people of Yemen: "Upon al-Harith bin Abd Kulal and the believers of Ma'afir and Hamdan who are with him is zakah on fruits; and on land (produce) watered by springs, a tenth is due; on what the sky waters, a tenth is also due; and on what is watered from wells, half a tenth is due."

Imam al-Shafi'i (may Allah have mercy on him) said: It has reached me that this hadith is narrated with a connected chain through the hadith of Ibn Abi Dhubab from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), and I know of no one who differs on it.

Ibrahim bin Ishaq al-Harbi (may Allah have mercy on him) said: I heard Ali bin al-Madini (may Allah have mercy on him) say that Malik bin Anas (may Allah have mercy on him) abandoned narrating from Ibn Abi Dhubab; there is no mention of him in his book, and he did not narrate anything from him.
Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) said that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "On land that the sky waters, a tenth is due; and on what is watered by a water-wheel (from a well) and the like, half a tenth is due."
Asim (may Allah have mercy on him) said: Malik (may Allah have mercy on him) told us: I was informed of it from Sulayman bin Yasar and Busr bin Sa'id (may Allah have mercy on them). And he (Malik) abandoned Ibn Abi Dhubab because of the munkar (objectionable) reports in his narration.
The Shaykh said: This hadith has no need of the narration of Ibn Abi Dhubab, for we have narrated it with two authentic chains from Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), and with an authentic chain from Jabir (may Allah be pleased with him) from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). It is the view of the generality (of scholars); they did not differ on it. And the hadith of Amr bin Hazm has already been mentioned.

Ja'far bin Muhammad (may Allah have mercy on him) narrates from his father that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) prescribed "a tenth ('ushr) on what the sky waters, or what is the produce of floods, streams or rain-fed land, and prescribed half a tenth (nisf al-'ushr) on what is watered by water-wheels and the like."
Hatim said: Al-ghayl is what is watered by flowing channels, and al-ba'l is the same as al-'adhy, which the rainwater waters. Yahya bin Adam said: I asked Abu Iyas al-Asadi, and he said: Al-ba'l, al-'athari and al-'adhy are what is watered by water from the sky. Yahya said: Al-'athari is what is sown specifically for the clouds, that is, for rain; it is watered only by the rain that falls on it. Al-ba'l refers to grapevines whose roots have reached down into the earth to the water, so they do not need watering for five or six years and can bear the absence of watering. Al-sayl is the water of the valley when it flows; and al-ghayl is a flow less than the great flood: when a little clear water flows, that is al-ghayl. And al-'adhy is rainwater.

He said: By whichever of the two it was watered with more. Yahya bin Adam (may Allah have mercy on him) said: Zakah is to be collected in proportion to each share.
