It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) that a man died whom the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) used to visit in his illness, and he was buried that very night. When morning came, he (peace and blessings be upon him) was informed of his death, and he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "What prevented you from informing me?" They said: "It was a dark night, so we did not wish to put you to hardship." Then he (peace and blessings be upon him) came to his grave and offered the funeral prayer.
Imam al-Bukhari (may Allah have mercy on him) narrated it in his Sahih from Muhammad, from Abu Mu'awiyah, and Imam Muslim (may Allah have mercy on him) narrated it in abridged form through another chain from al-Shaybani.

It is narrated from Sayyidah Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her): I went in to Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him), and she narrated a hadith. Then she said: He said: "On which day did he (peace and blessings be upon him) die?" I said: "On Monday." He said: "I hope (that my death comes) between now and the night." Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) did not die until evening came on the night of Tuesday, and he was buried before morning. He asked: "In how many garments was he (peace and blessings be upon him) shrouded?" I said: "In three white Yemeni sheets, among which there was no shirt and no turban." Then he looked at a garment of his in which he had been nursed during his illness, which had a stain of saffron or red clay on it, and said: "Wash this garment of mine, add two more garments to it, and shroud me in them." I said: "This is worn out." He said: "The living are more entitled to new clothes than the dead; it is only for the pus and fluids (of the body)."
It has been narrated from Sayyidah Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her) that he (peace and blessings be upon him) was buried at night, and from Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) that Sayyidah Fatimah (may Allah be pleased with her), the daughter of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), was buried at night. It has been narrated from Sayyiduna Uthman bin Affan (may Allah be pleased with him) that he was buried after the later Isha. In the Book of Prayer it has been narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) that he led the funeral prayer of Sayyidah Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her) after the Fajr prayer.
