Abd al-Rahman bin Ka'b bin Malik (may Allah have mercy on him) narrates that Jabir (may Allah be pleased with him) informed him that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) would put two men from those slain at Uhud together in a single cloth and ask: "Which of them had learned more of the Qur'an?" Then whoever was pointed out, he would put him forward in the lahd (niche of the grave), and he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "I will be a witness over these on the Day of Resurrection." And he (peace and blessings be upon him) ordered: "Bury them with their blood." Their funeral prayer was not offered, nor were they washed.

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) that on the day of the Battle of Uhud, he (peace and blessings be upon him) passed by Sayyiduna Hamzah bin Abd al-Muttalib (may Allah be pleased with him). His body had been cut and mutilated, so he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Were it not for (his) paternal aunt Safiyyah (may Allah be pleased with her) seeing (him in this state), I would have left him as he is, until Allah Almighty gathers him from the bellies of the birds and the beasts." Then he was shrouded in a coarse woollen sheet; when his head was covered his feet were exposed, and when his feet were covered his head was uncovered, so his head was covered. And he (peace and blessings be upon him) did not offer the funeral prayer over any of the martyrs other than him. Then he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Today I am a witness over you." And he (peace and blessings be upon him) was putting two and three together in a single grave, and he (peace and blessings be upon him) would ask: "Who knew more of the Qur'an?" So he would be lowered into the lahd first; and two or three men were put together in a single shroud.
Ali bin Umar al-Hafiz (may Allah have mercy on him) says: This wording, "and he did not offer the funeral prayer over any of the martyrs other than him", is not mahfuz (preserved). Abu Isa (may Allah have mercy on him) says: I asked Imam Bukhari (may Allah have mercy on him) about it, and he said: The hadith of Sayyiduna Jabir bin Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with them both) is hasan, and the hadith of Usamah bin Zayd is ghayr mahfuz (not preserved); Usamah bin Zayd erred in it.

Abd al-Rahman bin Ka'b bin Malik narrates from his father, Sayyiduna Ka'b bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him), that on the day of Uhud the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Has anyone seen where Hamzah was killed?" A man said: I found him and I know where he was killed. So he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Then go and show us." Then he went out until he stopped by Sayyiduna Hamzah (may Allah be pleased with him). He saw that his belly had been split open and he had been mutilated, so he said: O Messenger of Allah, by Allah, he has been mutilated! And he (peace and blessings be upon him) disliked looking at him in this state. Then he (peace and blessings be upon him) stood among the slain and said: "I am a witness over all of these. Wrap them in their blood. Indeed, there is no wounded one who will be brought on the Day of Resurrection but that his wound will be flowing with blood; its colour will be the colour of blood, but its fragrance will be the fragrance of musk." And he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Put forward in the lahd the one who knows more of the Qur'an."

One, two and three men were buried in a single grave, and he (peace and blessings be upon him) would ask: "Which of them recited more of the Qur'an?" Then he would be put forward.
