Sayyiduna Khabbab bin al-Aratt (may Allah be pleased with him) said: We emigrated with the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) in the path of Allah, seeking the pleasure of Allah Almighty, and our reward became due upon Allah. Among us were those who passed on without enjoying anything of that reward; one of them was Mus'ab bin Umayr (may Allah be pleased with him), who was martyred on the day of Uhud. We found nothing in which to shroud him except a coarse woollen sheet (namirah); when we placed it over his face, that is, over his head, his feet came out, and when we put it over his feet, his head was left bare. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Put it over his head, and put idhkhir grass over his feet." Then he said: And among us are those whose fruit has ripened and who are picking it.

Sa'd bin Ibrahim narrates from his father that food was brought to Abd al-Rahman bin Awf (may Allah be pleased with him) while he was fasting, and he said: Mus'ab bin Umayr (may Allah be pleased with him) was martyred, and he was better than me, and he was shrouded in a sheet such that if his head was covered with it, his feet were left bare, and if his feet were covered, his head was left bare. I think he also said: Hamzah (may Allah be pleased with him) was martyred, and he too was better than me. Then the world was spread out for us, or he said: We were given of the world what we were given, and we began to fear that our good deeds had been hastened for us. And he began to weep, until he left the food.

It is narrated from Sayyiduna al-Zubayr (may Allah be pleased with him) that on the day of Uhud, when the polytheists turned back, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) sat down to one side. Meanwhile a woman came, looking over the slain, and the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "The woman! The woman!" When I looked at her closely, it was my mother, Sayyidah Safiyyah (may Allah be pleased with her). I said: "Mother, go back." She struck me on my chest and said: 'La arda lak' (may you have no land). I said: "The beloved Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) insists that you (go back)." He said: Then she gave me two garments and said: Shroud my brother in these. Sayyiduna al-Zubayr (may Allah be pleased with him) said: Beside Sayyiduna Hamzah (may Allah be pleased with him) we saw the body of a Companion from the Ansar (may Allah be pleased with him) who had no shroud. We felt some unease in our hearts that we should shroud Sayyiduna Hamzah (may Allah be pleased with him) in two garments while the Ansari beside him had no shroud. Sayyiduna al-Zubayr (may Allah be pleased with him) said: We cast lots between the two of them for the better of the two garments, then we shrouded each of them in the garment that fell to his share.
