أَخْبَرَنَا أَبُو الْحُسَيْنِ عَلِيُّ بْنُ عَبْدِ اللهِ بْنِ بِشْرَانَ بِبَغْدَادَ، أنبأ إِسْمَاعِيلُ بْنُ مُحَمَّدٍ الصَّفَّارُ، وَأَبُو جَعْفَرٍ مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ عَمْرٍو الرَّزَّازُ قَالَا: ثنا سَعْدَانُ بْنُ نَصْرٍ، ثنا سُفْيَانُ بْنُ عُيَيْنَةَ، عَنْ عَمْرٍو، سَمِعَ جَابِرَ بْنَ عَبْدِ اللهِ يَقُولُ: " أَتَى رَسُولُ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ قَبْرَ عَبْدِ اللهِ بْنِ أُبَيٍّ بَعْدَ مَا أُدْخِلَ حُفْرَتَهُ، فَأَمَرَ بِهِ فَأُخْرِجَ، فَوَضَعَهُ عَلَى رُكْبَتَيْهِ، أَوْ فَخِذَيْهِ، فَنَفَثَ عَلَيْهِ مِنْ رِيقِهِ، وَأَلْبَسَهُ قَمِيصَهُ ". وَاللهُ أَعْلَمُ ". رَوَاهُ الْبُخَارِيُّ فِي الصَّحِيحِ عَنْ مَالِكِ بْنِ إِسْمَاعِيلَ وَغَيْرِهِ، وَرَوَاهُ مُسْلِمٌ عَنْ أَبِي بَكْرِ بْنِ أَبِي شَيْبَةَ، وَغَيْرِهِ عَنْ سُفْيَانَ.
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Jabir bin Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with them both) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) came to the grave of Abdullah bin Ubayy after he had been placed in it. He (peace and blessings be upon him) gave the order and he was taken out; he (peace and blessings be upon him) placed him on his knees, applied his blessed saliva to him, and clothed him in his shirt. وَأَخْبَرَنَا أَبُو الْحُسَيْنِ بْنُ بِشْرَانَ، أنبأ إِسْمَاعِيلُ بْنُ مُحَمَّدٍ الصَّفَّارُ، وَأَبُو جَعْفَرٍ الرَّزَّازُ قَالَا: ثنا سَعْدَانُ بْنُ نَصْرٍ، ثنا سُفْيَانُ، عَنْ عَمْرٍو، سَمِعَ جَابِرَ بْنَ عَبْدِ اللهِ يَقُولُ: لَمَّا كَانَ الْعَبَّاسُ بْنُ عَبْدِ الْمُطَّلِبِ بِالْمَدِينَةِ طَلَبَتْ لَهُ الْأَنْصَارُ ثَوْبًا يَكْسُونَهُ، فَلَمْ يَجِدُوا قَمِيصًا يَصْلُحُ عَلَيْهِ إِلَّا قَمِيصَ عَبْدِ اللهِ بْنِ أُبَيٍّ، فَكَسَوْهُ إِيَّاهُ ". رَوَاهُ الْبُخَارِيُّ عَنْ عَبْدِ اللهِ بْنِ مُحَمَّدٍ الْمُسْنَدِيِّ عَنْ سُفْيَانَ، وَقَدْ قِيلَ إِنَّ النَّبِيَّ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ قَصَدَ بِمَا فَعَلَ مَكَافَأَتَهُ بِمَا صَنَعَ، وَاللهُ أَعْلَمُ.
Sayyiduna Jabir bin Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with them both) narrates that Sayyiduna al-Abbas bin Abd al-Muttalib (may Allah be pleased with him) was in Madinah, and the Ansar looked for a garment to clothe him with, but they did not find any shirt that fit him except the shirt of Abdullah bin Ubayy (the hypocrite), so they clothed him in that shirt.
It has been said that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) did that (for him) as a repayment for what he had done (he had clothed Sayyiduna al-Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him) in a shirt). And Allah knows best.

أَخْبَرَنَا أَبُو عَمْرٍو الْأَدِيبُ، أنبأ أَبُو بَكْرٍ الْإِسْمَاعِيلِيُّ، أنبأ ابْنُ نَاجِيَةَ، ثنا إِسْحَاقُ، ثنا سُفْيَانُ، فَذَكَرَ الْحَدِيثَ وَزَادَ قَالَ سُفْيَانُ: فَلَعَلَّ النَّبِيَّ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ جَازَاهُ بِذَلِكَ الْقَمِيصِ.
Ishaq (may Allah have mercy on him) said: Sufyan (may Allah have mercy on him) narrated a similar hadith to us, and Sufyan (may Allah have mercy on him) added: Perhaps he (peace and blessings be upon him) gave him the shirt to wear as a recompense for that.
وَأَخْبَرَنَا أَبُو عَبْدِ اللهِ الْحَافِظُ، أنبأ أَبُو عَبْدِ اللهِ مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ يَعْقُوبَ، ثنا يَحْيَى بْنُ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ يَحْيَى، ثنا مُسَدَّدٌ، ثنا يَحْيَى، عَنْ عُبَيْدِ اللهِ بْنِ عُمَرَ، عَنْ نَافِعٍ، عَنِ ابْنِ عُمَرَ قَالَ: " لَمَّا تُوُفِّيَ عَبْدُ اللهِ بْنُ أُبَيِّ بْنِ سَلُولٍ جَاءَ ابْنُهُ عَبْدُ اللهِ بْنُ عَبْدِ اللهِ إِلَى رَسُولِ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ فَسَأَلَهُ أَنْ يُعْطِيَهُ قَمِيصَهُ يُكَفِّنُ فِيهِ أَبَاهُ، فَأَعْطَاهُ، ثُمَّ سَأَلَهُ أَنْ يُصَلِّيَ عَلَيْهِ، فَقَامَ رَسُولُ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ لِيُصَلِّيَ عَلَيْهِ، فَقَامَ عُمَرُ فَأَخَذَ بِثَوْبِ رَسُولِ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ، وَقَالَ: يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ، أَتُصَلِّي عَلَيْهِ وَقَدْ نَهَاكَ اللهُ أَنْ تُصَلِّيَ عَلَيْهِ، فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ: " إِنَّمَا خَيَّرَنِي اللهُ فَقَالَ {اسْتَغْفِرْ لَهُمْ، أَوْ لَا تَسْتَغْفِرْ لَهُمْ، إِنْ تَسْتَغْفِرْ لَهُمْ سَبْعِينَ مَرَّةً فَلَنْ يَغْفِرَ اللهُ لَهُمْ} [التوبة: ٨٠] وَسَأَزِيدُ عَلَى سَبْعِينَ " قَالَ: إِنَّهُ مُنَافِقٌ، قَالَ: فَصَلَّى عَلَيْهِ رَسُولُ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ فَأَنْزَلَ اللهُ عَزَّ وَجَلَّ {وَلَا تُصَلِّ عَلَى أَحَدٍ مِنْهُمْ مَاتَ أَبَدًا وَلَا تَقُمْ عَلَى قَبْرِهِ} [التوبة: ٨٤] " الْآيَةَ ". رَوَاهُ الْبُخَارِيُّ فِي الصَّحِيحِ عَنْ مُسَدَّدٍ، وَرَوَاهُ مُسْلِمٌ عَنْ أَبِي مُوسَى، وَغَيْرِهِ عَنْ يَحْيَى الْقَطَّانِ.
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) that when Abdullah bin Ubayy bin Salul died, his son Abdullah bin Abdullah came to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) and asked him: Give me your shirt so that I may shroud my father in it. So he (peace and blessings be upon him) gave it to him. Then he asked him: Please lead his funeral prayer. So the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) stood up to lead the funeral prayer, whereupon Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) took hold of the shirt of him (peace and blessings be upon him) and said: O Messenger of Allah! Will you lead his funeral prayer when Allah Almighty has forbidden you? He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Rather, Allah Almighty has given me a choice," and he recited this verse: "Ask forgiveness for them or do not ask forgiveness for them; even if you ask forgiveness for them seventy times, Allah will never forgive them" [Surah al-Tawbah: 80], meaning: whether you seek forgiveness for them or not, even if you seek forgiveness seventy times, Allah Almighty will still not forgive them; "and perhaps I will do it more than seventy times." Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said: He is a hypocrite. He said: Then the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) led his funeral prayer, and Allah Almighty revealed this blessed verse: "And do not ever pray over any of them who dies, nor stand at his grave" [Surah al-Tawbah: 84], meaning: from now on you shall not pray the funeral prayer over any of them, nor ever stand at their grave.
أَخْبَرَنَا أَبُو أَحْمَدَ الْمِهْرَجَانِيُّ الْعَدْلُ، أنبأ أَبُو بَكْرِ بْنُ جَعْفَرٍ الْمُزَكِّي، ثنا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ إِبْرَاهِيمَ الْبُوشَنْجِيُّ، ثنا ابْنُ بُكَيْرٍ، ثنا مَالِكٌ، عَنِ ابْنِ شِهَابٍ، عَنْ حُمَيْدِ بْنِ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ، عَنْ عَبْدِ اللهِ بْنِ عَمْرِو بْنِ الْعَاصِ أَنَّهُ قَالَ: " الْمَيِّتُ يُقَمَّصُ، وَيُؤَزَّرُ، وَيُلَفُّ بِالثَّوْبِ الثَّالِثِ، فَإِنْ لَمْ يَكُنْ إِلَّا ثَوْبٌ وَاحِدٌ كُفِّنَ فِيهِ ". وَهَذَا مَوْقُوفٌ.
Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Amr bin al-As (may Allah be pleased with them both) said: The deceased is to be dressed in a shirt and a waist-wrapper, and wrapped in a third cloth; and if there is only a single cloth, he is to be shrouded in it.
