Abu al-Khasib (may Allah have mercy on him) said: I was sitting when Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) came, and a man vacated his place, but he refused to sit there and sat in another place. The man kept saying: What harm would there have been if you had sat there? Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) said: I will not sit in your place nor in anyone else's place, ever since I heard from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) that "A man came and another vacated his place for him; he intended to sit in his place, so the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) forbade him from that."
This is how Abu al-Khasib Ziyad bin Abd al-Rahman reported it. He is correct in reporting the action of Ibn Umar, for Salim bin Abdullah also narrated it in the same way; however, he differed from Salim and Nafi' in the wording of the hadith that Ibn Umar narrated from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), for they both narrated from him the hadith about making someone rise, not about someone rising of his own accord.

Sa'id bin Abi al-Hasan narrates that Sayyiduna Abu Bakrah (may Allah be pleased with him) came regarding some testimony, and a man stood up from his place, but he refused to sit there and said: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) "forbade this, and also that a man should wipe his hand on the garment of someone who has not clothed him."

(a) Sa'id bin Abi al-Hasan (may Allah have mercy on him) said: Abu Bakrah (may Allah be pleased with him) came regarding some testimony, and a man rose from his place for him. Abu Bakrah (may Allah be pleased with him) said that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) used to say: "When a man vacates his place for you, do not sit in it," or he said: "Do not make a man rise from his place and then sit in it yourself, and do not wipe your hand on a garment that you do not own."
(b) It is possible that the hadith from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) concerns the prohibition of making someone rise, as the hafiz narrators reported it from Ibn Umar and Jabir bin Abdullah from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), and that Ibn Umar and Abu Bakrah (may Allah be pleased with them both) used to refrain, out of scrupulousness, from sitting [in such a place] even when people rose for them voluntarily without being made to rise. And Allah knows best.
