Yahya bin Abi Ishaq narrates from Sayyiduna Anas (may Allah be pleased with him): "We set out with the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) and performed Hajj with him, and he kept praying two rak'ahs each until he returned." The narrator said: I said: "How long did you stay in Makkah?" He said: "Ten (days)."
This is an authentic hadith. By his words "We stayed there ten (days)," Sayyiduna Anas bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him) meant (the stay) in Makkah, Mina and Arafat. That is because the established reports show that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) arrived in Makkah on his Hajj when four days of Dhu al-Hijjah had passed, and he stayed there three days, shortening (the prayer). The day he entered Makkah was not counted, because he was travelling on it, nor was the Day of Tarwiyah (the 8th of Dhu al-Hijjah), because on it he went out to Mina and prayed Zuhr, Asr, Maghrib, Isha and Fajr there. When the sun rose, he moved on from there to Arafat; then he set off from there when the sun had set, until he came to Muzdalifah, and spent that night there until morning. Then he set off from there until he came to Mina and performed his rites there. Then he went on to Makkah and performed his Tawaf there. Then he returned to Mina and stayed there three days, shortening (the prayer). Then he departed from there and halted at al-Muhassab, and had the departure announced among his Companions. Then he set out, passed by the House and performed Tawaf of it before the Fajr prayer, and then left for Madinah. So he (peace and blessings be upon him) did not stay in any one place for four (days) while shortening. All of this is found in the combined narrations of Ibn Abbas, Aishah, Jabir bin Abdullah, Anas bin Malik and others about the Hajj, and those narrations, with their full wording, will come in the Book of Hajj, if Allah wills.

(a) Ikrimah reports from Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) travelled and, while staying (in one place), shortened the prayer for nineteen days. So when we travelled, we kept shortening the prayer for up to nineteen days, and when we stayed longer, we prayed the complete prayer.
(b) Luwayn narrated it from Abu Awanah, (with the words): "We travelled with the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), and he stayed seventeen days, shortening the prayer." He then also mentioned the statement of Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) about seventeen days.

The Shaykh said: Whoever counts the stay as nineteen days makes it nineteen by including both the day of entering Makkah and the day of leaving.
Whoever counts the stay as 18 days counts one of the two days of arrival and departure, and whoever counts the stay as 17 days does not count either of those two days.
