Urwah bin al-Zubayr narrates from Sayyidah Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her), the wife of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) went out one night to the mosque to pray, and many people prayed together with the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). In the morning the people talked among themselves about it, so on the second night even more people gathered. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) also came out on the second night and prayed, and the people prayed with him (peace and blessings be upon him). In the morning the people talked about it. On the third night there was a crowd. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) came out and the people prayed with him (peace and blessings be upon him). On the fourth night the people could not fit into the mosque, and the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) did not come out. The people began calling out, saying: The prayer! The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) did not come out; then he came out for the morning prayer. When he (peace and blessings be upon him) had completed the prayer, he turned towards the people and said: "Your state last night was not hidden from me, but I feared that it might be made obligatory upon you and you would be unable to do it." He (peace and blessings be upon him) would only encourage the night prayer of Ramadan; he did not command it. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Whoever stands in prayer in Ramadan in a state of faith, seeking the reward, his past sins will be forgiven."
The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) passed away and the matter remained like this; then it also remained like this in the period of Sayyiduna Abu Bakr al-Siddiq (may Allah be pleased with him) and the early period of Sayyiduna Umar al-Faruq (may Allah be pleased with him).

Abd al-Rahman bin Abd al-Qari (may Allah have mercy on him) was one of the officials in the time of Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him), and he used to work together with Sayyiduna Abdullah bin al-Arqam (may Allah be pleased with him) over the treasury (bayt al-mal) of the Muslims. Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) went out one night, and Abd al-Rahman (may Allah have mercy on him) was with him. They went around the mosque and saw that the people in the mosque were divided into different groups: one was praying alone, and another was engaged in prayer together with a group. Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said: If they were gathered behind one reciter, that would be better. When Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) had resolved upon this, he ordered Sayyiduna Ubayy bin Ka'b (may Allah be pleased with him) to lead them in the night prayer. Then one day Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) went out and all the people were praying behind one reciter, and Abd al-Rahman bin Abd al-Qari (may Allah have mercy on him) was with him. Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said: This is a good way, and the part (of the night) which they sleep through is better than the part in which they stand in prayer (he meant the last part of the night), and the people used to stand in prayer in the early part of the night.

Abd al-Rahman bin Abd al-Qari (may Allah have mercy on him) says: I came to the mosque with Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) one night in Ramadan, and the people were scattered: one was praying alone and elsewhere there was a congregation. Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said: I think that if I gather them behind one reciter, it will be more fitting. Then, in accordance with his resolve, he gathered them behind Sayyiduna Ubayy bin Ka'b (may Allah be pleased with him). Then I went out with him on another night and all the people were praying behind one reciter. Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said: This is a good way, and the part (of the night) which they sleep through is better than the part in which they stand in prayer. He meant the last part of the night, and the people used to stand in prayer in the early part of the night.
