Urwah bin al-Zubayr narrates from Sayyidah Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her), the wife of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) went out one night to the mosque to pray, and many people prayed together with the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). In the morning the people talked among themselves about it, so on the second night even more people gathered. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) also came out on the second night and prayed, and the people prayed with him (peace and blessings be upon him). In the morning the people talked about it. On the third night there was a crowd. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) came out and the people prayed with him (peace and blessings be upon him). On the fourth night the people could not fit into the mosque, and the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) did not come out. The people began calling out, saying: The prayer! The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) did not come out; then he came out for the morning prayer. When he (peace and blessings be upon him) had completed the prayer, he turned towards the people and said: "Your state last night was not hidden from me, but I feared that it might be made obligatory upon you and you would be unable to do it." He (peace and blessings be upon him) would only encourage the night prayer of Ramadan; he did not command it. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Whoever stands in prayer in Ramadan in a state of faith, seeking the reward, his past sins will be forgiven."
The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) passed away and the matter remained like this; then it also remained like this in the period of Sayyiduna Abu Bakr al-Siddiq (may Allah be pleased with him) and the early period of Sayyiduna Umar al-Faruq (may Allah be pleased with him).
