Abd al-Rahman bin Abd al-Qari (may Allah have mercy on him) says: I came to the mosque with Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) one night in Ramadan, and the people were scattered: one was praying alone and elsewhere there was a congregation. Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said: I think that if I gather them behind one reciter, it will be more fitting. Then, in accordance with his resolve, he gathered them behind Sayyiduna Ubayy bin Ka'b (may Allah be pleased with him). Then I went out with him on another night and all the people were praying behind one reciter. Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said: This is a good way, and the part (of the night) which they sleep through is better than the part in which they stand in prayer. He meant the last part of the night, and the people used to stand in prayer in the early part of the night.
