Ubaydullah bin Abdullah (may Allah have mercy on him) relates that Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) said: I and Sayyiduna al-Fadl bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) came on the day of Arafah while the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) was leading the people in prayer, and we had come riding our she-donkey. We passed in front of part of the row, then got down from it and left it to graze, and the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) did not say anything to us.

Hadith Takhrij«صحيح۔ اخرجه مسلم 504۔ ليس عند مسلم قوله انا وفضل بن عباس»
Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) relates: I came riding a she-donkey, and in those days I was close to puberty. the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) was leading the people in prayer at Mina. I passed in front of part of the row, got down from the she-donkey, let it loose to graze, and went and joined the row. No one objected to me.
In the narration of Imam al-Shafi'i (may Allah have mercy on him): I let my donkey loose to graze and myself joined the row, and no one objected to me.

(a) A similar narration is reported through another chain, except that it has "in front of the row", without the word "part", and he said: "No one objected to me."
(b) Yunus bin Yazid narrated this hadith from Ibn Shihab (may Allah have mercy on him), saying that this incident took place at Mina during the Farewell Hajj.
(c) Ma'mar narrated it from Ibn Shihab (may Allah have mercy on him), saying: during the Farewell Hajj, or on the day of the Conquest of Makkah; and the statement about the Farewell Hajj is more correct.
(d) We have already related from the Kitab al-Manasik of the Muwatta' the narration of Imam Malik (may Allah have mercy on him), in which he said in this hadith: "towards something other than a wall".
(e) Imam al-Shafi'i (may Allah have mercy on him) says: "(That is,) without a sutrah." And Allah knows best.
(f) This indicates the error of the one who thinks that he (peace and blessings be upon him) prayed towards a sutrah and that the sutrah of the imam is the sutrah of those following him, and that this is why the passing of the donkey did not break their prayer. The narration of Imam Malik (may Allah have mercy on him) contains the evidence that he (peace and blessings be upon him) prayed without a sutrah.

Abu al-Sahba' (may Allah have mercy on him) relates: We were with Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both), and the people mentioned what breaks the prayer. Someone said: "A dog, a woman and a donkey." Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) said: "A boy from Banu Hashim, or Banu Abd al-Muttalib, and I came riding together on one donkey while the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) was leading the people in prayer in open ground. We got down from the donkey and left it in front of them, and they paid no attention to it. Two little girls of Banu Hashim came running and started fighting, so the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) took hold of them and separated them from each other, and paid no attention to it."

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both): A boy from Banu Hashim and I came riding a donkey and passed in front of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) while he (peace and blessings be upon him) was praying, and he did not break off his prayer because of that. Two little girls of Banu Abd al-Muttalib came and took hold of the knees of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), and he (peace and blessings be upon him) made peace between them and separated them, but he did not break off his prayer because of that.

Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) says: A boy from Banu Abd al-Muttalib and I came riding a donkey while the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) was leading the prayer. We let the donkey go and joined the prayer. Two little girls of Banu Abd al-Muttalib came running, and the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) made peace between them, but he (peace and blessings be upon him) did not break off the prayer because of that; and a young goat began to pass in front of him (peace and blessings be upon him), and even then he (peace and blessings be upon him) did not break off the prayer.

Sayyiduna Anas bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him) says: the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) led the people in prayer. A donkey passed in front of him, and Ayyash bin Abi Rabi'ah (may Allah be pleased with him) said: 'Subhan Allah, Subhan Allah' (Glory be to Allah, glory be to Allah)! When the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) concluded the prayer with the salam, he said: "Who said Subhan Allah just now?" Ayyash (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "I did, O Messenger of Allah! I had heard that a donkey (by passing in front) breaks the prayer." He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Nothing breaks the prayer," meaning the prayer is not invalidated by anything passing in front.

Salim (may Allah have mercy on him) relates that someone said to Sayyiduna Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) that Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Ayyash bin Abi Rabi'ah (may Allah be pleased with him) says: "A dog and a donkey break the prayer." Sayyiduna Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) said: "Nothing breaks the prayer of a Muslim."
