It is narrated from Sayyiduna Sa'd bin Abi Waqqas (may Allah be pleased with him) regarding the verse "Those who are heedless of their prayer" [Surah al-Ma'un: 5], "those who are lax in their prayers": In the recitation of Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him), 'lahun' (distracted) is in place of 'sahun' (heedless). He said: 'Sahun' and 'lahun' mean forgetting the prayer and not paying attention to its time.

It is narrated from Mus'ab bin Sa'd (may Allah have mercy on him) that he said: I said to my respected father (may Allah be pleased with him): "Dear father, what is your view about this saying of Allah Almighty: 'Those who are heedless of their prayer' [Surah al-Ma'un: 5]? Does it refer to the person who talks to himself in the prayer?" He said: "No; who among us does not talk to himself in the prayer? (That is, who can keep his thoughts under control?) Rather, the heedlessness in 'sahun' means delaying the prayer from its time."

Ikrimah bin Ibrahim narrates with his chain that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) was asked about "Those who are heedless of their prayer" [Surah al-Ma'un: 5], "woe to those who are neglectful of the prayer", and he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "It refers to wasting the time."
This hadith is only authentic as mawquf (stopping at the Companion), and Ikrimah bin Ibrahim was declared weak by Yahya bin Ma'in and other imams of hadith.

Al-Walid bin al-Ayzar said: I heard Abu Amr al-Shaybani say: The owner of this house told me, and he pointed towards the house of Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him), that he said: I asked the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him): "Which deed is most beloved to Allah Almighty?" He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Offering the prayer at its time." I asked: "Then which deed?" He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Treating one's parents well." I asked: "Then which?" He said: "Jihad in the path of Allah." Ibn Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) said that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) told me these three things; had I asked for more, he (peace and blessings be upon him) would have told me more.

Ata' bin Yasar (may Allah have mercy on him) and Abdullah al-Sunabihi (may Allah have mercy on him) said that Abu Muhammad held the view that the witr is wajib (obligatory).
Sayyiduna Ubadah bin al-Samit (may Allah be pleased with him) said: Abu Muhammad is mistaken. I bear witness that I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) saying: "Allah, the Lord of Might, has made five prayers obligatory. Whoever performs ablution well, offers them on time, performs their bowing calmly and observes humility and devotion in them, has a promise from Allah Almighty that He will forgive him; and whoever does not do so has no promise from Allah Almighty: if He wills He will forgive him, and if He wills He will punish him."
