It is narrated from Sayyiduna Jabir (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) used to teach us the tashahhud: 'Bismillahi wa billah, at-tahiyyatu lillahi was-salawatu wat-tayyibat, as-salamu 'alayka ayyuhan-nabiyyu wa rahmatullahi wa barakatuh, as-salamu 'alayna wa 'ala 'ibadillahis-salihin, ashhadu an la ilaha illallah, wa ashhadu anna Muhammadan 'abduhu wa rasuluh, as'alullahal-jannah, wa a'udhu bihi minan-nar' (In the name of Allah and with His help and enabling. All verbal, practical and physical acts of worship are for Allah. Peace be upon you, O Prophet, and the mercy of Allah and His blessings. Peace be upon us and upon the righteous servants of Allah. I bear witness that there is no god but Allah, and I bear witness that Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) is His servant and Messenger. I ask Allah for Paradise and I seek refuge with Him from the Fire).

(a) A similar hadith is reported through another chain. In it there is the addition: just as he used to teach us a surah of the Qur'an; and he said: 'At-tahiyyatu lillah, as-salawatut-tayyibatu lillah'; and at its end he said: 'Nas'alullahal-jannah, wa na'udhu bihi minan-nar' (We ask Allah for Paradise and we seek refuge with Him from the Fire).
(b) Imam Abu Isa al-Tirmidhi (may Allah have mercy on him) says: I asked Imam al-Bukhari (may Allah have mercy on him) about this hadith, and he said: "It is a mistake." The correct version is what al-Layth bin Sa'd narrated from Abu al-Zubayr, from Sa'id bin Jubayr and Tawus, from Ibn Abbas.
Ayman bin Nabil alone narrated it from Abu al-Zubayr from Jabir.

Hisham bin Urwah narrates from his father that Sayyiduna Umar bin al-Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him) used to teach the people the tashahhud in the prayer while addressing them on the minbar of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), saying: "When one of you recites the tashahhud, let him recite it like this: 'Bismillahi khayril-asma, at-tahiyyatuz-zakiyatus-salawatut-tayyibatu lillah, as-salamu 'alayka ayyuhan-nabiyyu wa rahmatullahi wa barakatuh, as-salamu 'alayna wa 'ala 'ibadillahis-salihin, ashhadu an la ilaha illallahu wahdahu la sharika lah, wa anna Muhammadan 'abduhu wa rasuluh' (In the name of Allah, which is the best of names. All verbal, physical and financial acts of worship are for Allah. Peace be upon you, O Prophet, and the mercy of Allah and His blessings. Peace be upon us and upon all the righteous servants of Allah. I bear witness that there is no god but Allah, He is alone and has no partner, and I bear witness that Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) is His servant and Messenger)." Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "After (the mention of) the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), send salam upon yourselves, then send salam upon all the righteous servants of Allah."

Nafi' (may Allah have mercy on him) says that Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) used to recite in the tashahhud: 'Bismillah, at-tahiyyatu lillah, was-salawatuz-zakiyatu lillah, as-salamu 'alayka ayyuhan-nabiyyu wa rahmatullahi wa barakatuh, as-salamu 'alayna wa 'ala 'ibadillahis-salihin' (In the name of Allah. All verbal and physical acts of worship are for Allah. Peace be upon you, O Prophet, and the mercy of Allah and His blessings. Peace be upon us and upon the righteous servants of Allah).
'Ashhadu an la ilaha illallah, wa ashhadu anna Muhammadan rasulullah' (I bear witness that there is no god but Allah, and I bear witness that Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) is the Messenger of Allah). He would recite this in the first two rak'ahs, and when he completed the tashahhud he would supplicate with whatever he wished. Then, when he sat (for the qa'dah) in the last rak'ah of the prayer, he would do the same, except that he would put the tashahhud first and then supplicate with whatever he wished. When he had completed the tashahhud and intended to give the salam, he would say: 'As-salamu 'alan-nabiyyi wa rahmatullahi wa barakatuh, as-salamu 'alayna wa 'ala 'ibadillahis-salihin' (Peace be upon the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), and the mercy of Allah and His blessings. Peace be upon us and upon the righteous servants of Allah). Then, turning to the right, he would say: 'As-salamu 'alaykum' (Peace be upon you). Then he would return the salam of the imam, and if anyone gave him the salam from his left, he would respond to him.

It is narrated from Sayyidah Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) used to recite these same words in the tashahhud of the prayer, in its middle and at its end: 'Bismillah, at-tahiyyatu lillah, as-salawatu lillah, az-zakiyatu lillah, ashhadu an la ilaha illallah, wa ashhadu anna Muhammadan 'abduhu wa rasuluh, as-salamu 'alayka ayyuhan-nabiyyu wa rahmatullahi wa barakatuh, as-salamu 'alayna wa 'ala 'ibadillahis-salihin' (I begin with the name of Allah. All verbal, practical and financial acts of worship are all for Allah. I bear witness that there is no god but Allah, and I bear witness that Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) is the servant of Allah and His Messenger. Peace be upon you, O Prophet, and the mercy of Allah and His blessings. Peace be upon us and upon all the righteous servants of Allah). He was counting it out for us on his hand, in the way the Arabs count.

(a) It is reported from Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) that when he sat for the tashahhud he would say 'Bismillah' (In the name of Allah).
(b) In another narration, reported from al-Harith (may Allah have mercy on him), when Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) was in the tashahhud he would say: 'Bismillahi wa billah' (In the name of Allah and with Allah).
(c) There is also a connected (mawsul) narration from Urwah (may Allah have mercy on him), but it does not mention 'Bismillah' (In the name of Allah).
(d) It is reported from Sayyiduna Ibn Umar and Sayyidah Aishah (may Allah be pleased with them both) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) used to say 'Bismillah' (In the name of Allah) before the tashahhud.
(e) It is reported from Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) that he heard a man reciting: 'Bismillah, at-tahiyyat' (In the name of Allah, all verbal acts of worship), and Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) rebuked him.
A narrator like al-Harith is not used as evidence. The authentic narration from Sayyidah Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her) does not mention 'Bismillah', except in what Muhammad bin Ishaq bin Yasar alone narrated. Thabit bin Zuhayr (who narrated it from Ibn Umar and Aishah from the Prophet) is munkar al-hadith (his narrations are rejected) and da'if (weak), and what is authentic from Ibn Umar is that it is mawquf (his own practice).

Abu al-Aliyah (may Allah have mercy on him) says that Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) heard a man in the prayer saying 'Al-hamdu lillah' (Praise be to Allah) at the beginning of the tashahhud, so he (may Allah be pleased with them both) rebuked him and said: Begin the tashahhud with 'At-tahiyyat'.

(a) Hammad says: I said to Ibrahim: Should I say 'Bismillah' (In the name of Allah) in the tashahhud? He said: Recite 'At-tahiyyat' (All verbal acts of worship). Hammad says: I said: Should I say 'Al-hamdu lillah' (All praise is for Allah)? He said: Say 'At-tahiyyatu lillah' (All verbal acts of worship are for Allah alone).
(b) Hammad says that when Sa'id bin Jubayr (may Allah have mercy on him) recited the tashahhud, he would also say 'Al-hamdu lillah' (All praise is for Allah).
