Nafi' (may Allah have mercy on him) says that Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) used to recite in the tashahhud: 'Bismillah, at-tahiyyatu lillah, was-salawatuz-zakiyatu lillah, as-salamu 'alayka ayyuhan-nabiyyu wa rahmatullahi wa barakatuh, as-salamu 'alayna wa 'ala 'ibadillahis-salihin' (In the name of Allah. All verbal and physical acts of worship are for Allah. Peace be upon you, O Prophet, and the mercy of Allah and His blessings. Peace be upon us and upon the righteous servants of Allah).
'Ashhadu an la ilaha illallah, wa ashhadu anna Muhammadan rasulullah' (I bear witness that there is no god but Allah, and I bear witness that Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) is the Messenger of Allah). He would recite this in the first two rak'ahs, and when he completed the tashahhud he would supplicate with whatever he wished. Then, when he sat (for the qa'dah) in the last rak'ah of the prayer, he would do the same, except that he would put the tashahhud first and then supplicate with whatever he wished. When he had completed the tashahhud and intended to give the salam, he would say: 'As-salamu 'alan-nabiyyi wa rahmatullahi wa barakatuh, as-salamu 'alayna wa 'ala 'ibadillahis-salihin' (Peace be upon the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), and the mercy of Allah and His blessings. Peace be upon us and upon the righteous servants of Allah). Then, turning to the right, he would say: 'As-salamu 'alaykum' (Peace be upon you). Then he would return the salam of the imam, and if anyone gave him the salam from his left, he would respond to him.
