The narrations of Imam Malik bin Anas, Ibn Jurayj, Sufyan bin Uyaynah, Shu'ayb bin Abi Hamzah, Uqayl bin Khalid, Yunus bin Yazid and other hadith scholars, from al-Zuhri, from Salim, from his father (Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar, may Allah be pleased with them both), from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), agree on raising the hands (in the prayer) to the level of the shoulders.
Likewise it is transmitted in the narration of Ayyub, from Nafi', from Sayyiduna Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both), from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him).
And it is exactly the same in the narration of Sayyiduna Abu Humayd al-Sa'idi (may Allah be pleased with him), which he related in the presence of ten of the Companions of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) (may Allah be pleased with them all).

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) that when the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) entered into the prayer, he would raise his hands up to his shoulders, and when he bowed or raised his head from bowing, he would also do 'raf' al-yadayn' (raising the hands).

Muhammad bin Amr bin Ata' (may Allah have mercy on him) said: I heard Abu Humayd al-Sa'idi (may Allah be pleased with him) saying to ten of the Companions of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), among whom was Abu Qatadah al-Harith bin Rib'i (may Allah be pleased with him): When the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) stood for the prayer, he would raise his hands up to his shoulders, then say the takbir. Then he mentioned the complete hadith.
In it there is also that he (peace and blessings be upon him) raised his hands when going into bowing, and when raising his head from bowing, and when he stood up after the two rak'ahs, and he (peace and blessings be upon him) would bring his hands up to the level of his shoulders.
Likewise is the narration of Sayyiduna Ali bin Abi Talib (may Allah be pleased with him), which he transmits from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him).

Sayyiduna Abd al-Jabbar bin Wa'il narrates from his father Sayyiduna Wa'il (may Allah be pleased with him) that he saw the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him): when he (peace and blessings be upon him) stood for the prayer, he would raise his hands up to the level of his shoulders and bring his thumbs up to his earlobes, then say the takbir.
(b) This hadith has been narrated from Asim bin Kulayb by al-Thawri, Shu'bah, Abu Awanah, Za'idah bin Qudamah, Bishr bin al-Mufaddal and a group, and they said in this hadith that he (peace and blessings be upon him) raised his hands up to the level of his ears.
Sharik narrated it from Asim and said that he raised his hands to the level of his ears.
(c) Likewise another narration, which is from Abd al-Jabbar bin Wa'il, from Alqamah bin Wa'il, from Wa'il, and a narration which is established from Sayyiduna Malik bin al-Huwayrith (may Allah be pleased with him), which they narrate from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), have: 'hatta yuhadhiya bihima udhunayh' (until he brought both his hands to the level of his ears); and in another narration there is: 'hatta yuhadhiya bihima furu'a udhunayh' (until he raised both hands up to his earlobes).

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Malik bin al-Huwayrith (may Allah be pleased with him) that when the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said the opening takbir (takbirat al-ihram), he would raise his hands up to his earlobes; and when he bowed he would do the same; and when he raised his head from bowing he would also do the same.
Isma'il bin Ulayyah narrated this hadith from Sa'id bin Abi Arubah, and at its beginning there is that he (peace and blessings be upon him) raised his hands and brought them close to his ears.
Likewise Hisham al-Dastuwa'i said the same from Qatadah in one of his two narrations, and in the other narration he said that he raised his hands up to his earlobes.
Shu'bah transmitted it from Qatadah, and he said that he (peace and blessings be upon him) brought his hands up to the level of his earlobes; and in another narration, that he brought them up to the level of his shoulders.
When these narrations differ, then either all of them are taken and one has the choice between them,
or the narration of the one about whom the reports differ is left, and the narration of the one about whom they do not differ is taken.
Imam al-Shafi'i (may Allah have mercy on him) said: Because it is more established in its chain, and it is the hadith of a number of narrators, and a number is more likely to preserve it than one.
The Shaykh (al-Bayhaqi) said: Along with these narrations, this is also the practice of Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him).
