It is narrated from Sayyiduna Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) used to attack when dawn broke, and he (peace and blessings be upon him) would listen for the adhan: if he heard the adhan he would hold back, and if not he would attack. He (peace and blessings be upon him) heard a man saying: 'Allahu akbar, Allahu akbar' (Allah is the Greatest, Allah is the Greatest), and the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "He is upon the fitrah." Then he said: 'Ashhadu an la ilaha illallah' (I bear witness that there is no god but Allah), and the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "He has come out of the Fire." The Companions looked, and he was a goatherd.

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Anas bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) used to attack at the time of the Fajr prayer. He (peace and blessings be upon him) would listen: if he heard the sound of the adhan he would hold back, and if not he would attack. One day he (peace and blessings be upon him) heard someone saying: 'Allahu akbar, Allahu akbar' (Allah is the Greatest, Allah is the Greatest). The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "He is upon the fitrah." He said: 'Ashhadu an la ilaha illallah' (I bear witness that there is no god worthy of worship but Allah). He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "You have come out of the Fire."

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) that we were with the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) on one of his journeys when suddenly we heard a caller saying: 'Allahu akbar, Allahu akbar' (Allah is the Greatest, Allah is the Greatest). The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "He is upon the fitrah." He said: 'Ashhadu an la ilaha illallah' (I bear witness that there is no god but Allah). The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "He has come out of the Fire." He said: We hurried towards him, and he was a man with livestock. The time of prayer had come, so he made the call.

It is narrated from Uqbah bin Amir (may Allah be pleased with him) that he said: I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) say: "Your Lord marvels at a shepherd of goats on a high mountain peak who gives the adhan for the prayer and prays. Then Allah Almighty says: 'Look at this servant of Mine; he gives the adhan and the iqamah for the prayer, fearing Me. I have forgiven My servant and admitted him into Paradise.'"

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Salman (may Allah be pleased with him) that any man who is in a land of shade (wilderness and the like), performs ablution or performs tayammum with clean soil, then gives the adhan for the prayer, then gives the iqamah and prays (in the hadith of Abu al-Abbas: then gives the iqamah for it), leads in prayer such of the soldiers of Allah whose two ends cannot be seen, or he said: whose two sides (al-Taymi was in doubt).

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Salman (may Allah be pleased with him): "Any man who is in barren land performs ablution if he finds water, well and good; otherwise he performs tayammum, and he announces the prayer, then gives the iqamah; then it is as if he has led in prayer such soldiers of Allah whose ends cannot be seen."
This is the correct version, mawquf (stopping at the Companion); it has also been narrated as marfu' (attributed to the Prophet), but its attribution to him is not authentic.

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Salman al-Farisi (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "When a man in a land of shade gives the adhan at the time of prayer, gives the iqamah for the prayer and prays, angels form a row behind him whose ends cannot be seen; they bow with his bowing, prostrate with his prostration and say Amin to his supplication."
