Sayyidah Umm Salamah (may Allah be pleased with her) said: In the time of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), women in postnatal bleeding (nifas) would sit for forty nights or forty days after giving birth, and we would rub wars (a yellow plant dye) on our faces for dark spots.
Abu al-Walid narrated it from Zuhayr, from Abd al-A'la, and that is not mahfuz (preserved).

Sayyidah Umm Salamah (may Allah be pleased with her) said: In the time of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), women in nifas would sit for forty days, and we would apply wars and saffron to our faces.
(b) Imam al-Bayhaqi (may Allah have mercy on him) said: It has reached me from Imam al-Tirmidhi that he asked Imam Muhammad bin Isma'il al-Bukhari (may Allah have mercy on him) about this hadith, and he said: Ali bin Abd al-A'la is thiqah (trustworthy); Shu'bah narrated from him. And Abu Sahl Kathir bin Ziyad is thiqah; I do not know any hadith of his other than this one.

Mussah al-Azdiyyah said: I performed Hajj and then went to Sayyidah Umm Salamah (may Allah be pleased with her). I said: O Mother of the Believers, Samurah bin Jundub (may Allah be pleased with him) orders women to make up the prayers of menstruation. She said: They are not to make them up. One of the wives of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) would sit in nifas for forty nights, and the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) did not order her to make up the prayers of nifas.

Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) said: Women in nifas will wait seven (days); if they become pure, well and good; otherwise fourteen (days); if they become pure, well and good; otherwise twenty-one (days); if they become pure, well and good; otherwise forty (days she will wait), then she will pray.

Sayyiduna Uthman bin Abi al-As al-Thaqafi (may Allah be pleased with him) said: Women in nifas will wait forty days, then perform ghusl.
Marfu' hadiths (attributed to the Prophet) have also been narrated on this; apart from what we have mentioned, all of them are weak.

Abdullah bin Muhammad bin Abd al-Aziz (may Allah have mercy on him) said: Imam Ahmad bin Hanbal (may Allah have mercy on him) was asked about women in nifas, while I was listening (to the conversation): how long should they sit when they see blood? He said: Forty days, then they will perform ghusl.

Ata' and al-Sha'bi (may Allah have mercy on them both) used to say: When the bleeding is prolonged, they will wait up to sixty (days), then perform ghusl and pray.

(a) It is narrated from al-Hasan (may Allah have mercy on him) that when women in nifas see (their blood), they should wait for fifty nights.
(b) In this there is evidence that he interpreted what he narrated from Uthman bin Abi al-As (may Allah be pleased with him) about forty days to mean that Uthman bin Abi al-As (may Allah be pleased with him) held that if she becomes pure before forty days, her husband will not have intercourse with her until forty days are complete. And we have narrated from Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) what indicates that he held the opposite view regarding what is less than forty days.

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) that when a woman in nifas sees purity, nothing is permissible for her except that she pray.
Hadith Referenceالسنن الكبرى للبيهقي / كتاب الحيض / 1616
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Mu'adh bin Jabal (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "When seven (days) have passed for a woman in nifas and she then sees purity, she should perform ghusl and pray."
Hadith Referenceالسنن الكبرى للبيهقي / كتاب الحيض / 1617
Sayyiduna Mu'adh bin Jabal (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates (the same) from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). This is more correct, but its chain is not strong.
Hadith Referenceالسنن الكبرى للبيهقي / كتاب الحيض / 1618
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Anas bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "The time set for women in nifas is forty nights, unless she sees purity before that."
Zayd al-Ammi, Sallam bin Salm al-Mada'ini, al-Arzami and al-Ala' bin Kathir al-Dimashqi are all da'if (weak).

Sahm, the freed slave of Ibn Sulaym, said that his mistress Umm Yusuf gave birth in Makkah and did not see any blood. She met Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her), who said: You are a woman whom Allah has purified. When she departed, she saw (blood).
