Buhayyah said: I heard a woman who was (perhaps) asking Sayyidah Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her) about menstruation. Sayyidah Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her) said: I asked the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) about a woman whose menstruation had become irregular and who was bleeding profusely. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) ordered me "to tell her to wait for as long as she used to menstruate each month, to sit for the extent of those days and leave prayer, then perform ghusl, bind a cloth around herself like a loincloth, and pray."

It is narrated from Sayyidah Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her) that Fatimah bint Abi Hubaysh (may Allah be pleased with her) asked the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him): I have istihadah and do not become pure; should I leave prayer? He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "That is a vein, not menstruation. When menstruation comes, leave prayer; and when it goes, wash the blood from your body, perform ablution and pray. It is from a vein, not menstruation."
In one narration: Fatimah bint Abi Hubaysh (may Allah be pleased with her) asked the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), and he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Wash the blood off yourself, perform ablution and pray."
Muslim recorded it without the words "and perform ablution", as though he considered them weak because they contradict the rest of the narrators from Hisham.

(a) Hisham narrated from his father that Fatimah bint Abi Hubaysh (may Allah be pleased with her) said: O Messenger of Allah, I have istihadah and do not become pure, and he mentioned the hadith. In it, he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Perform ghusl at the time of your purity and perform ablution for prayer."
In one narration: "Perform ablution for every prayer." (b) The Shaykh said: The correct view is that this is the saying of Urwah bin al-Zubayr (may Allah have mercy on him).

It is narrated from Sayyidah Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her) that Fatimah bint Abi Hubaysh (may Allah be pleased with her) came to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and said: O Messenger of Allah, I am a woman with istihadah and I do not become pure; should I leave prayer? He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "No, that is a vein, not menstruation. When your menstruation comes, leave prayer; and when it goes, wash the blood from your body, then pray." The narrator said: My father said: Then perform ablution for every prayer until that time (of menstruation) comes.
Urwah's statement in it is sahih (authentic).

It is narrated from Sayyidah Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her) that Fatimah bint Abi Hubaysh (may Allah be pleased with her) came to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) and said: "O Messenger of Allah, I am a woman with istihadah and I do not become pure; should I leave prayer?" He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "No, that is a vein, not menstruation. Do not pray during the days of your menstruation, then perform ghusl and perform ablution for every prayer, even if the blood drips onto the mat."
(b) Hafs bin Ghiyath, Abu Usamah and Asbat bin Muhammad narrated it from al-A'mash, and they made it mawquf (a statement of) Sayyidah Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her).
(c) Abd al-Rahman bin Bishr bin al-Hakam said: We came from Abdullah bin Dawud al-Khuraybi to Yahya bin Sa'id al-Qattan (may Allah have mercy on him), and he asked: Where have you come from? We said: From Ibn Dawud. He asked: What did he narrate to you? We said: Al-A'mash, from Habib bin Abi Thabit, from Urwah, from Aishah. Yahya said: Sufyan al-Thawri (may Allah have mercy on him) knew this (chain) better than anyone; he held that Habib bin Abi Thabit did not hear anything from Urwah bin al-Zubayr.
(d) Ali bin al-Madini (may Allah have mercy on him) said that Habib bin Abi Thabit did not hear from Urwah bin al-Zubayr. Imam Yahya bin Sa'id (may Allah have mercy on him) said: Habib's narration from Urwah is worth nothing.
(e) Abbas bin Muhammad al-Duri said: I asked Yahya bin Ma'in (may Allah have mercy on him): Are Habib's narrations established? He said: Yes. Then he mentioned two narrations. Abbas thought that he meant two munkar (rejected) narrations: (1) the menstruating woman will pray even if the blood drips onto the mat, and the second, the hadith of the kiss.
(f) Imam Abu Dawud (may Allah have mercy on him) said: The hadith of al-A'mash from Habib is weak.
(g) The evidence for the weakness of al-A'mash's hadith from Habib is that Hafs bin Ghiyath made it mawquf; he rejected that Habib's hadith is marfu'. Likewise, Asbat also narrated it from al-A'mash as mawquf. Ibn Dawud narrated its beginning from al-A'mash as marfu', and rejected that it contains ablution for every prayer. The evidence for the weakness of Habib's hadith is the narration of al-Zuhri, from Urwah, from Aishah. Sayyidah Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her) said: She used to perform ghusl for every prayer. This is in the hadith of the woman with istihadah.

Sayyidah Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her) narrated from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) that he (peace and blessings be upon him) said concerning the woman with istihadah: "She should leave prayer during the days of her menstruation, then perform ghusl once, then perform ablution until the like of her menstrual days (comes again). If she sees yellowness, she should sprinkle water, perform ablution and pray."

(a) Yazid narrated both of them with the two chains, except that he made the first one the saying of Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her). (b) Imam Abu Dawud (may Allah have mercy on him) said: The hadith of Ayyub (may Allah have mercy on him) is weak; it is not authentic. (c) The Shaykh said: It has been narrated from Abu Yusuf (may Allah have mercy on him) as marfu'.

(b) Abu Yusuf alone narrated it from Abdullah bin Ali Abu Ayyub al-Ifriqi.
(c) Abu Yusuf is thiqah (trustworthy) when he narrates from a trustworthy narrator.
(d) It is narrated from Imam al-Shafi'i (may Allah have mercy on him) that it was said to him: We have narrated that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) ordered the woman with istihadah to "perform ablution for every prayer." He said: I said: Yes, you have narrated that, and we hold it, by analogy with the Sunnah of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) regarding ablution, that if anything comes out of the anus, the penis or the private part, ablution is required. The Imam said: If this narration were preserved (mahfuz) with us, it would be dearer to us than analogy.

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) came out of the toilet and food was brought near to him. The Companions offered him water (for ablution), and he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "I have only been commanded to perform ablution when I stand for prayer." Abu Bakr said: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) informed that Allah Almighty commanded him to perform ablution when he stands for prayer, not upon the entry of a (prayer) time or its ending.
