Sayyiduna al-Mughirah bin Shu'bah (may Allah be pleased with him) said that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) wiped over his socks and sandals.

Abu Asim narrated it in the same way.
Abu Muhammad (Yahya bin Mansur) said: I saw Muslim bin al-Hajjaj declare this report weak, and he said: Abu Qays al-Awdi and Huzayl bin Shurahbil cannot bear this, given that they contradicted the eminent narrators who narrated this report from al-Mughirah and said: He wiped over the khuffs (leather socks). And he said: We do not abandon the apparent meaning of the Qur'an on the strength of the likes of Abu Qays and Huzayl. Abd al-Rahman bin Mahdi said: I said to Sufyan al-Thawri: If you narrated to me the hadith of Abu Qays from Huzayl, I would not accept it from you. Sufyan said: The hadith is da'if (weak), or wahin (very weak), or a word like that. Ahmad bin Hanbal said: This is narrated only through the hadith of Abu Qays, and Abd al-Rahman bin Mahdi used to narrate it and say: It is munkar (denounced). Ali bin al-Madini said: The hadith of al-Mughirah bin Shu'bah about wiping was narrated from al-Mughirah by the people of Madinah, the people of Kufah and the people of Basrah, and Huzayl bin Shurahbil narrated it from al-Mughirah, except that he said: and he wiped over the socks, and so he contradicted the people. Yahya bin Ma'in said: All the people narrate it as wiping over the khuffs, except Abu Qays. Abu Dawud said: Abd al-Rahman bin Mahdi would not narrate this hadith, because what is well known from al-Mughirah from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) is that he wiped over the khuffs. Abu Dawud said: This was also narrated from Abu Musa al-Ash'ari from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), but it is neither connected nor strong.

Sayyiduna Abu Musa (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "I saw the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) wiping over socks and sandals." (b) The hearing of al-Dahhak bin Abd al-Rahman from Abu Musa is not established, and in it is Isa bin Sinan, who is da'if (weak) and cannot be used as evidence. (c) Imam Yahya bin Ma'in (may Allah have mercy on him) said: Isa bin Sinan is weak.

Abu al-Warqa' heard a man from his people, who was called Abdullah bin Ka'b, (say): I saw Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) urinate, then he wiped over his socks and sandals.

Ka'b bin Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him) said: I saw Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) urinate; he performed ablution, then wiped over his sandals and socks.

Isma'il bin Raja' narrates from his father, who said: I saw Sayyiduna al-Bara' bin Azib (may Allah be pleased with him); he urinated, then performed ablution and wiped over his socks and sandals, then he prayed.

It is narrated from Sa'id bin Abdullah (may Allah have mercy on him): I saw Sayyiduna Anas bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him); he came to the toilet, then performed ablution and wiped over his white buttoned cap and over his black socks of fine cloth. (b) Some weak narrators have narrated it as marfu' (attributed to the Prophet), and that has no standing. (c) Wiping (over socks) has been narrated from Abu Umamah, Sahl bin Sa'd and Amr bin Hurayth (may Allah be pleased with them). Imam Abu Dawud (may Allah have mercy on him) said: It has also been narrated from Umar bin al-Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him) and Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both). (d) The teacher Abu al-Walid would interpret the hadith of wiping over socks and sandals as meaning that the wiping was over socks fitted with leather (soles), not over a sock alone or a sandal alone. And I have found a report from Anas bin Malik that indicates this.

Rashid bin Najih said: I saw Sayyiduna Anas bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him) enter the toilet, and he was wearing socks whose lower part was of leather and whose upper part was of wool; he wiped over them.
