It is narrated from Sayyiduna al-Mughirah bin Shu'bah (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) performed ablution and wiped over his khuffs (leather socks). A man was with Sayyiduna al-Mughirah bin Shu'bah (may Allah be pleased with him), and he said: O Mughirah bin Shu'bah! Where did the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) get khuffs from? Al-Mughirah (may Allah be pleased with him) said: Al-Najashi gave them to him (peace and blessings be upon him) as a gift. (b) The Shaykh said: Al-Sha'bi narrated the hadith of wiping from Urwah bin al-Mughirah, from his father, and this hadith is a supporting witness (shahid) for the hadith of Dalham bin Salih.

Abd al-Razzaq (may Allah have mercy on him) said: I asked Ma'mar (may Allah have mercy on him) about a khuff (leather sock) that becomes torn, and he said: When anything comes out from the areas of ablution, do not wipe over it; rather, take them off.
He said: Abd al-Razzaq (may Allah have mercy on him) narrated to us; he said: I heard Sufyan al-Thawri (may Allah have mercy on him) saying: Wipe over them as long as they cling to the foot, even if they are torn. Then he said: The khuffs of the Muhajirun and the Ansar (may Allah be pleased with them) used to be torn like that. The view of Ma'mar bin Rashid on this matter is more beloved to us.

The father of Salim (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) regarding the muhrim (one in the state of ihram) that he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "He should not wear khuffs (leather socks), except one who cannot find sandals; he should cut them so that they come below the ankles." (b) The jurist Abu al-Walid (may Allah have mercy on him) said: This hadith indicates that when a khuff does not cover the whole foot, it does not take the ruling of a khuff over which wiping is permitted.
