Urwah bin al-Mughirah bin Shu'bah narrates from his father (Sayyiduna al-Mughirah, may Allah be pleased with him) that he said: I was with the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) on a journey, and he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Do you have water with you?" I said: Yes. He (peace and blessings be upon him) dismounted from his mount, then he (peace and blessings be upon him) walked on until he disappeared from me in the darkness of the night. Then he came back, and I poured water over him (peace and blessings be upon him) from the vessel. He (peace and blessings be upon him) washed his hands and face. He (peace and blessings be upon him) was wearing a woollen cloak, and he (peace and blessings be upon him) could not bring his forearms out of it, so he brought them out from beneath his cloak, washed them and wiped his head. Then I bent down to take off the leather socks of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), but he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Leave them, for I put them on while in a state of purity." Then he (peace and blessings be upon him) wiped over them.

(a) Hamzah bin al-Mughirah narrates from his father (may Allah be pleased with him) that he said: We were with the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) on a journey, and he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "O Mughirah, stay behind, and you people, keep going." I had water with me. When the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) had relieved himself and returned, I poured water over him (peace and blessings be upon him). He (peace and blessings be upon him) washed his face, then began to wash his hands. He (peace and blessings be upon him) was wearing a Roman cloak whose sleeve was tight, so he (peace and blessings be upon him) brought his hands out from below, washed them, wiped his head, and also wiped over his leather socks.

Abd al-Rahman bin Abi Bakrah narrates from his father (may Allah be pleased with him), from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), that he (peace and blessings be upon him) "granted the traveller a concession of three days and three nights, and the resident a day and a night, when he has put on his leather socks in a state of ablution, to wipe over them." (b) Imam al-Shafi'i (may Allah have mercy on him) narrated it from Abd al-Wahhab, but al-Rabi' was in doubt about this phrase, namely: when he has put on his leather socks in a state of ablution; whereas what was taken as Imam al-Shafi'i's (may Allah have mercy on him) statement is in fact the wording of the hadith itself.

Zirr bin Hubaysh (may Allah have mercy on him) said: I came to Sayyiduna Safwan bin Assal al-Muradi (may Allah be pleased with him), and he said: What has brought you? I said: I have come seeking knowledge. He said: I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) say: "No one goes out of his house in search of knowledge except that the angels lower their wings for him, out of pleasure with what he is doing." I said: I have come to ask you about wiping over leather socks. He said: Yes, I was in the army that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) sent out, and he ordered us to wipe over our leather socks, if we had put them on in a state of purity, for three (days) when we were travelling and a night when we were resident, and not to take them off for urine, defecation or sleep, and not to take them off except for major ritual impurity (janabah). He said: And I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) say: "In the west there is a door open for repentance, the breadth of which is a journey of seventy years; it will not be closed until the sun rises from its direction."
