أَخْبَرَنَا أَبُو زَكَرِيَّا يَحْيَى بْنِ إِبْرَاهِيمَ بْنِ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ يَحْيَى الْمُزَكِّي وَأَبُو بَكْرٍ أَحْمَدُ بْنُ الْحَسَنِ الْقَاضِي قَالَا: أنا أَبُو الْعَبَّاسِ مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ يَعْقُوبَ أنا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ عَبْدِ اللهِ بْنِ عَبْدِ الْحَكَمِ، أنا ابْنُ وَهْبٍ، قَالَ: وَحَدَّثَنَا بَحْرُ بْنُ نَصْرٍ، قَالَ: قُرِئَ عَلَى ابْنِ وَهْبٍ: أَخْبَرَكَ عَمْرُو بْنُ الْحَارِثِ، عَنْ أَبِي النَّضْرِ، عَنْ أَبِي سَلَمَةَ بْنِ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنِ عَوْفٍ، عَنْ عَبْدِ اللهِ بْنِ عُمَرَ، عَنْ سَعْدِ بْنِ أَبِي وَقَّاصٍ، عَنْ رَسُولِ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ " أَنَّهُ مَسَحَ عَلَى الْخُفَّيْنِ ".
Sayyiduna Sa'd bin Abi Waqqas (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) that he (peace and blessings be upon him) wiped over the leather socks (khuffs).
وَأَخْبَرَنَا أَبُو عَبْدِ اللهِ الْحَافِظُ، أَخْبَرَنِي أَبُو الْحَسَنِ أَحْمَدُ بْنُ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ عَبْدُوسِ بْنِ سَلَمَةَ الْعَنْزِيُّ، ثنا عُثْمَانُ بْنُ سَعِيدٍ الدَّارِمِيُّ، ثنا أَحْمَدُ بْنُ صَالِحٍ، وَهَارُونُ بْنُ مَعْرُوفٍ، أَنَّ عَبْدَ اللهِ بْنَ وَهْبٍ، حَدَّثَهُمْ عَنْ عَمْرٍو، فَذَكَرَهُ بِإِسْنَادِهِ مِثْلَهُ وَزَادَ أَنَّ عَبْدَ اللهِ بْنَ عُمَرَ سَأَلَ عُمَرَ عَنْ ذَلِكَ فَقَالَ: نَعَمْ إِذَا حَدَّثَكَ سَعْدٌ عَنْ رَسُولِ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ شَيْئًا فَلَا تَسْأَلْ عَنْهُ غَيْرَهُ رَوَاهُ الْبُخَارِيُّ فِي الصَّحِيحِ عَنْ أَصْبُغَ بْنِ الْفَرَجِ عَنِ ابْنِ وَهْبٍ.
Abdullah bin Wahb narrated the hadith to them from Amr (bin al-Harith); he narrated it with the same chain and added that Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) asked Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) about it, and he said: Yes! When Sa'd (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates something to you from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), do not ask anyone else about it.
وَأَخْبَرَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ عَبْدِ اللهِ الْحَافِظُ، أنا أَبُو بَكْرٍ أَحْمَدُ بْنُ إِسْحَاقَ أنا عَلِيُّ بْنُ عَبْدِ الْعَزِيزِ، ثنا مُعَلَّى بْنُ أَسَدٍ، ثنا عَبْدُ الْعَزِيزِ بْنُ الْمُخْتَارِ، عَنْ مُوسَى بْنِ عُقْبَةَ، أَخْبَرَنِي أَبُو النَّضْرِ، عَنْ أَبِي سَلَمَةَ، عَنْ عَبْدِ اللهِ بْنِ عُمَرَ، عَنْ سَعْدِ بْنِ أَبِي وَقَّاصٍ حَدِيثًا يَرْفَعُهُ إِلَى النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ فِي الْوُضُوءِ عَلَى الْخُفَّيْنِ أَنَّهُ " لَا بَأْسَ بِالْوُضُوءِ عَلَى الْخُفَّيْنِ وَحَدَّثَ أَبُو سَلَمَةَ أَنَّ عَبْدَ اللهِ بْنَ عُمَرَ حَدَّثَهُ بِذَلِكَ عَنْ سَعْدِ بْنِ أَبِي وَقَّاصٍ وَأَنَّ عُمَرَ قَالَ لِعَبْدِ اللهِ كَأَنَّهُ يَلُومُهُ: حَدَّثَكَ سَعْدُ بْنُ أَبِي وَقَّاصٍ حَدِيثًا وَلَمْ تَأْخُذْ بِهِ، إِذَا حَدَّثَكَ سَعْدٌ عَنْ رَسُولِ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ فَلَا تَبْغِ وَرَاءَ حَدِيثِهِ حَدِيثًا، ذَكَرَ الْبُخَارِيُّ إِسْنَادَهُ.
Sayyiduna Sa'd bin Abi Waqqas (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates a hadith in marfu' form from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) concerning wiping over the leather socks: "There is no harm in wiping over the leather socks in ablution." (b) Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) was told this hadith by Sayyiduna Sa'd bin Abi Waqqas (may Allah be pleased with him), and Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said to Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both), as though rebuking him: Sa'd bin Abi Waqqas (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated a hadith to you and you did not act upon it. When Sa'd bin Abi Waqqas (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates a hadith to you, do not seek any other hadith beyond it.
أَخْبَرَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ عَبْدِ اللهِ الْحَافِظُ، أَخْبَرَنِي أَبُو النَّضْرِ الْفَقِيهُ، ثنا أَبُو عَبْدِ اللهِ مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ نَصْرٍ، ثنا يَحْيَى بْنُ يَحْيَى، قَالَ: حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو مُعَاوِيَةَ، عَنِ الْأَعْمَشِ، عَنْ إِبْرَاهِيمَ، عَنْ هَمَّامٍ، قَالَ: بَالَ جَرِيرٌ، ثُمَّ تَوَضَّأَ وَمَسَحَ عَلَى خُفَّيْهِ فَقِيلَ: تَفْعَلُ هَذَا؟ قَالَ: " نَعَمْ رَأَيْتُ رَسُولَ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ بَالَ ثُمَّ تَوَضَّأَ وَمَسَحَ عَلَى خُفَّيْهِ " قَالَ الْأَعْمَشُ: قَالَ إِبْرَاهِيمُ: كَانَ يُعْجِبُهُمْ هَذَا الْحَدِيثَ لِأَنَّ إِسْلَامَ جَرِيرٍ كَانَ بَعْدَ نُزُولِ الْمَائِدَةِ رَوَاهُ مُسْلِمٌ فِي الصَّحِيحِ عَنْ يَحْيَى بْنِ يَحْيَى وَغَيْرِهِ عَنْ أَبِي مُعَاوِيَةَ وَرَوَاهُ الْبُخَارِيُّ عَنْ آدَمَ عَنْ شُعْبَةَ عَنِ الْأَعْمَشِ.
Hammam says that Sayyiduna Jarir (may Allah be pleased with him) urinated, then performed ablution and wiped over his leather socks. It was said: You do this? He said: "Yes, I saw the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him); he (peace and blessings be upon him) urinated, then performed ablution and wiped over his leather socks." (b) Ibrahim says that they used to like this hadith very much, because Sayyiduna Jarir (may Allah be pleased with him) accepted Islam after the revelation of Surah al-Ma'idah.
وَأَخْبَرَنَا أَبُو عَبْدِ اللهِ الْحَافِظُ، ثنا أَبُو الْعَبَّاسِ مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ يَعْقُوبَ، ثنا أَبُو الْحَسَنِ مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ سِنَانٍ الْقَزَّازُ، ثنا عَبْدُ اللهِ بْنُ دَاوُدَ، عَنْ بُكَيْرِ بْنِ عَامِرٍ، عَنْ أَبِي زُرْعَةَ بْنِ عَمْرِو بْنِ جَرِيرٍ أَنَّ جَرِيرًا بَالَ ثُمَّ تَوَضَّأَ وَمَسَحَ عَلَى الْخُفَّيْنِ وَقَالَ: " مَا يَمْنَعُنِي أَنْ أَمْسَحَ وَقَدْ رَأَيْتُ رَسُولَ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ مَسَحَ " قَالُوا: إِنَّمَا كَانَ ذَلِكَ قَبْلَ نُزُولِ الْمَائِدَةِ قَالَ: " مَا أَسْلَمْتُ إِلَّا بَعْدَ نُزُولِ الْمَائِدَةِ ".
It is narrated from Abu Zur'ah bin Amr bin Jarir (may Allah have mercy on him) that Sayyiduna Jarir (may Allah be pleased with him) urinated, then performed ablution and wiped over the leather socks, and said: Nothing prevents me from wiping; I have indeed seen the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) wiping. They said: That was (the ruling) before the revelation of Surah al-Ma'idah. He said: I became Muslim after the revelation of Surah al-Ma'idah.
أَخْبَرَنَا أَبُو عَبْدِ اللهِ الْحَافِظُ، أَخْبَرَنَا عَبْدُ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنُ الْحَسَنِ الْأَسَدِيُّ بِهَمَدَانَ ثنا إِبْرَاهِيمُ بْنُ الْحُسَيْنِ، ثنا آدَمُ بْنُ أَبِي إِيَاسٍ، ثنا شُعْبَةُ، عَنِ الْأَعْمَشِ، عَنْ أَبِي وَائِلٍ، عَنْ حُذَيْفَةَ، قَالَ: " مَشَى رَسُولُ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ إِلَى سُبَاطَةِ قَوْمٍ فَبَالَ قَائِمًا ثُمَّ دَعَا بِمَاءٍ فَجِئْتُهُ بِمَاءٍ فَتَوَضَّأَ وَمَسَحَ عَلَى خُفَّيْهِ ⦗٤٠٧⦘ رَوَاهُ الْبُخَارِيُّ فِي الصَّحِيحِ عَنْ آدَمَ بْنِ أَبِي إِيَاسٍ وَرَوَاهُ مُسْلِمٌ مِنْ وَجْهٍ آخَرَ عَنِ الْأَعْمَشِ.
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Hudhayfah (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) walked to the rubbish heap of some people and urinated standing. Then he called for water; I brought him water, and he (peace and blessings be upon him) performed ablution and wiped over his leather socks.
أَخْبَرَنَا أَبُو الْحَسَنِ عَلِيُّ بْنُ أَحْمَدَ بْنِ عَبْدَانَ، ثنا أَحْمَدُ بْنُ عُبَيْدٍ الصَّفَّارُ، ثنا ابْنُ مِلْحَانَ، ثنا يَحْيَى بْنُ بُكَيْرٍ، ثنا اللَّيْثُ، قَالَ ابْنُ عُبَيْدٍ: وَحَدَّثَنَا إِسْمَاعِيلُ بْنُ الْفَضْلِ، ثنا قُتَيْبَةُ بْنُ سَعِيدٍ، ثنا اللَّيْثُ، عَنْ يَحْيَى بْنِ سَعِيدٍ، عَنْ سَعْدِ بْنِ إِبْرَاهِيمَ، عَنْ نَافِعِ بْنِ جُبَيْرٍ، عَنْ عُرْوَةَ بْنِ الْمُغِيرَةِ بْنِ شُعْبَةَ، عَنْ أَبِيهِ، عَنْ رَسُولِ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ أَنَّهُ خَرَجَ لِحَاجَتِهِ فَاتَّبَعَهُ الْمُغِيرَةُ بِإِدَاوَةٍ فِيهَا مَاءٌ فَصَبَّ عَلَيْهِ حِينَ فَرَغَ مِنْ حَاجَتِهِ فَتَوَضَّأَ وَمَسَحَ عَلَى خُفَّيْهِ " رَوَاهُ الْبُخَارِيُّ فِي الصَّحِيحِ عَنْ عَمْرِو بْنِ خَالِدٍ وَرَوَاهُ مُسْلِمٌ عَنْ قُتَيْبَةَ كِلَاهُمَا عَنِ اللَّيْثِ بْنِ سَعْدٍ.
Urwah, the son of Sayyiduna al-Mughirah bin Shu'bah (may Allah be pleased with him), narrates from his father, from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), that he (peace and blessings be upon him) went out to relieve himself, and Sayyiduna al-Mughirah (may Allah be pleased with him) followed him with a vessel of water. He poured water for him when he had finished relieving himself, then he (peace and blessings be upon him) performed ablution and wiped over his leather socks.
أَخْبَرَنَا أَبُو عَبْدِ اللهِ إِسْحَاقُ بْنُ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ يُوسُفَ بْنِ يَعْقُوبَ، ثنا أَبُو الْعَبَّاسِ مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ يَعْقُوبَ، ثنا الرَّبِيعُ بْنُ سُلَيْمَانَ، نا بِشْرُ بْنُ بَكْرٍ، عَنِ الْأَوْزَاعِيِّ، ح. قَالَ: وَحَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ عَوْفٍ الطَّائِيُّ، ثنا أَبُو الْمُغِيرَةِ، ثنا الْأَوْزَاعِيُّ، ح. وَأَخْبَرَنَا أَبُو عَبْدِ اللهِ الْحَافِظُ، أَخْبَرَنِي أَبُو مُحَمَّدٍ الْحَسَنُ بْنُ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ حَلِيمٍ الصَّائِغُ بِمَرْوَ أنا أَبُو الْمُوَجَّهِ، أنا عَبْدَانُ، أنا عَبْدُ اللهِ بْنُ الْمُبَارَكِ، أنا الْأَوْزَاعِيُّ، عَنْ يَحْيَى بْنِ أَبِي كَثِيرٍ، عَنْ أَبِي سَلَمَةَ بْنِ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ، عَنْ جَعْفَرِ بْنِ عَمْرِو بْنِ أُمَيَّةَ الضَّمْرِيِّ، عَنْ أَبِيهِ، قَالَ: " رَأَيْتُ رَسُولَ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ مَسَحَ عَلَى عِمَامَتِهِ وَخُفَّيْهِ " لَفْظُ حَدِيثِ عَبْدِ اللهِ بْنِ الْمُبَارَكِ وَفِي الْحَدِيثِ الْآخَرِ أَنَّهُ رَأَى رَسُولَ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ مَسَحَ عَلَى الْخُفَّيْنِ وَالْعِمَامَةِ رَوَاهُ الْبُخَارِيُّ فِي الصَّحِيحِ عَنْ عَبْدَانَ وَكَذَلِكَ رَوَاهُ شَيْبَانُ بْنُ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ وَحَرْبُ بْنُ شَدَّادٍ وَأَبَانُ عَنْ يَحْيَى بْنِ أَبِي كَثِيرٍ فِي الْمَسْحِ عَلَى الْخُفَّيْنِ، وَرَوَاهُ مَعْمَرٌ عَنْ يَحْيَى عَنْ أَبِي سَلَمَةَ عَنْ عَمْرٍو.
(a) Ja'far bin Amr bin Umayyah al-Damri (may Allah have mercy on him) narrates from his father (may Allah be pleased with him) that he said: I saw the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) wiping over his turban and his leather socks.
(b) The wording of the hadith of Abdullah bin al-Mubarak (may Allah have mercy on him) is that he saw the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) wipe over the leather socks and the turban. (c) It is narrated from Yahya bin Abi Kathir (may Allah have mercy on him) concerning wiping over the leather socks.
(b) The wording of the hadith of Abdullah bin al-Mubarak (may Allah have mercy on him) is that he saw the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) wipe over the leather socks and the turban. (c) It is narrated from Yahya bin Abi Kathir (may Allah have mercy on him) concerning wiping over the leather socks.
أَخْبَرَنَاهُ أَبُو طَاهِرٍ الْفَقِيهُ، أنا أَبُو بَكْرٍ الْقَطَّانُ، ثنا أَحْمَدُ بْنُ يُوسُفَ السُّلَمِيُّ، ثنا عَبْدُ الرَّزَّاقِ، أنبأ مَعْمَرٌ، عَنْ يَحْيَى بْنِ أَبِي كَثِيرٍ، عَنْ أَبِي سَلَمَةَ، عَنْ عَمْرِو بْنِ أُمَيَّةَ الضَّمْرِيِّ، قَالَ: رَأَيْتُ النَّبِيَّ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ يَمْسَحُ عَلَى خُفَّيْهِ " ⦗٤٠٨⦘ وَقَدْ ذَكَرَ الْبُخَارِيُّ هَذِهِ الرِّوَايَاتِ إِشَارَةً إِلَيْهَا.
Sayyiduna Amr bin Umayyah al-Damri (may Allah be pleased with him) says: "I saw the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) wiping over his leather socks." Imam al-Bukhari (may Allah have mercy on him) has alluded to these narrations.
أَخْبَرَنَا أَبُو عَبْدِ اللهِ الْحَافِظُ، ثنا أَبُو الْعَبَّاسِ بْنُ يَعْقُوبَ، ثنا الْحَسَنُ بْنُ عَلِيِّ بْنِ عَفَّانَ الْعَامِرِيُّ، حَدَّثَنَا ابْنُ نُمَيْرٍ، عَنِ الْأَعْمَشِ، وَأَخْبَرَنَا أَبُو عَبْدِ اللهِ، أنا أَبُو الْفَضْلِ مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ إِبْرَاهِيمَ الْمُزَكِّي، ثنا أَحْمَدُ بْنُ سَلَمَةَ، ثنا إِسْحَاقُ بْنُ إِبْرَاهِيمَ، ثنا عِيسَى بْنِ يُونُسَ، ثنا الْأَعْمَشُ، عَنِ الْحَكَمِ بْنِ عُتَيْبَةَ، عَنْ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنِ أَبِي لَيْلَى، عَنْ كَعْبِ بْنِ عُجْرَةَ، قَالَ: حَدَّثَنِي بِلَالٌ عَنْ رَسُولِ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ قَالَ: رَأَيْتُ رَسُولَ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ تَوَضَّأَ وَمَسَحَ عَلَى الْخُفَّيْنِ وَالْخِمَارِ لَفْظُ حَدِيثِ عِيسَى وَفِي حَدِيثِ ابْنِ نُمَيْرٍ بِإِسْنَادِهِ عَنْ بِلَالٍ أَنَّ النَّبِيَّ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ تَوَضَّأَ وَمَسَحَ عَلَى الْخُفَّيْنِ وَالْعِمَامَةِ رَوَاهُ مُسْلِمٌ فِي الصَّحِيحِ عَنْ إِسْحَاقَ بْنِ إِبْرَاهِيمَ وَكَذَلِكَ رَوَاهُ عَلِيُّ بْنُ مُسْهِرٍ وَأَبُو مُعَاوِيَةَ عَنِ الْأَعْمَشِ وَتَابَعَهُمْ عَلَى ذَلِكَ عَبْدُ الْوَاحِدِ بْنُ زِيَادٍ وَأَبُو إِسْحَاقَ الْفَزَارِيُّ وَمُحَمَّدُ بْنُ فُضَيْلٍ وَرَوَاهُ الثَّوْرِيُّ عَنِ الْأَعْمَشِ فَلَمْ يَذْكُرْ كَعْبًا فِي إِسْنَادِهِ، وَكَذَلِكَ رَوَاهُ شُعْبَةُ فِي آخَرِينَ عَنِ الْحَكَمِ مُرْسَلًا، وَرَوَاهُ زَائِدَةُ وَعَمَّارُ بْنُ رُزَيْقٍ عَنِ الْأَعْمَشِ فَذَكَرَا فِيهِ الْبَرَاءَ بَدَلَ كَعْبٍ وَمَنْ أَقَامَ إِسْنَادَهُ ثِقَاتٌ وَاللهُ أَعْلَمُ.
(a) It is narrated from Sayyiduna Bilal (may Allah be pleased with him): I saw the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) performing ablution, and he (peace and blessings be upon him) wiped over the leather socks and the head-cover.
(b) It is narrated from Sayyiduna Bilal (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) performed ablution and wiped over the leather socks and the turban. (d) Ali bin Mushir and Abu Mu'awiyah narrated this from al-A'mash, and Abd al-Wahid bin Ziyad, Abu Ishaq al-Fazari and Muhammad bin Fudayl corroborated them. Al-Thawri narrated it from al-A'mash but did not mention Ka'b in his chain. Likewise Shu'bah, among others, narrated it from al-Hakam in mursal form.
Those who narrated its chain in full are thiqat (trustworthy), and Allah knows best.

(d) Ali bin Mushir and Abu Mu'awiyah narrated this from al-A'mash, and Abd al-Wahid bin Ziyad, Abu Ishaq al-Fazari and Muhammad bin Fudayl corroborated them. Al-Thawri narrated it from al-A'mash but did not mention Ka'b in his chain. Likewise Shu'bah, among others, narrated it from al-Hakam in mursal form.
Those who narrated its chain in full are thiqat (trustworthy), and Allah knows best.
أَخْبَرَنَا أَبُو عَبْدِ اللهِ مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ عَبْدِ اللهِ الْحَافِظُ، ثنا أَبُو عَبْدِ اللهِ مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ عَبْدِ اللهِ الْأَصْبَهَانِيُّ، ثنا أَحْمَدُ بْنُ مِهْرَانَ الْأَصْبَهَانِيُّ، ثنا عَلِيُّ بْنُ قَادِمٍ، ثنا سُفْيَانُ، عَنْ عَلْقَمَةَ بْنِ مَرْثَدٍ، عَنِ ابْنِ بُرَيْدَةَ وَهُوَ سُلَيْمَانُ بْنُ بُرَيْدَةَ، عَنْ أَبِيهِ، قَالَ: رَأَيْتُ رَسُولَ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ تَوَضَّأَ مَرَّةً مَرَّةً وَمَسَحَ عَلَى الْخُفَّيْنِ وَصَلَّى الصَّلَوَاتِ كُلِّهَا بِوَضُوءٍ وَاحِدٍ فَقَالَ لَهُ عُمَرُ: صَنَعْتَ شَيْئًا مَا كُنْتَ تَصْنَعُهُ فَقَالَ: " عَمْدًا فَعَلْتُهُ يَا عُمَرُ ".
Sulayman bin Buraydah narrates from his father that he said: I saw the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him); he (peace and blessings be upon him) performed ablution washing each part once, wiped over his leather socks, and offered all the prayers with one ablution. Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said to him (peace and blessings be upon him): You have done something that you (peace and blessings be upon him) did not do before. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "O Umar! I did it deliberately."
وَأَخْبَرَنَا أَبُو عَلِيٍّ الرُّوذْبَارِيُّ، ثنا ابْنُ دَاسَةَ، ثنا أَبُو دَاوُدَ، ثنا مُسَدَّدٌ، ثنا يَحْيَى، عَنْ سُفْيَانَ، حَدَّثَنَا عَلْقَمَةُ بْنُ مَرْثَدٍ، عَنْ سُلَيْمَانَ بْنِ بُرَيْدَةَ، عَنْ أَبِيهِ، قَالَ: " صَلَّى رَسُولُ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ يَوْمَ الْفَتْحِ خَمْسَ صَلَوَاتٍ بِوُضُوءٍ وَاحِدٍ وَمَسَحَ عَلَى خُفَّيْهِ " فَقَالَ لَهُ عُمَرُ: إِنِّي رَأَيْتُكَ صَنَعْتَ شَيْئًا لَمْ تَصْنَعْهُ قَالَ: " عَمْدًا صَنَعْتُهُ ". رَوَاهُ مُسْلِمٌ فِي الصَّحِيحِ عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ حَاتِمٍ عَنْ يَحْيَى بْنِ سَعِيدٍ.
Sulayman bin Buraydah narrates from his father (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) offered five prayers with one ablution on the day of the Conquest of Makkah and wiped over the leather socks. Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said to him (peace and blessings be upon him): "I have seen that you (peace and blessings be upon him) did something that you did not do before." He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "I did it deliberately."
وَأَخْبَرَنَا أَبُو بَكْرٍ أَحْمَدُ بْنُ الْحَسَنِ الْقَاضِي، ثنا أَبُو الْعَبَّاسِ مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ يَعْقُوبَ، ثنا الْعَبَّاسُ بْنُ مُحَمَّدٍ الدُّورِيُّ، ثنا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ عُبَيْدٍ، ثنا بُكَيْرُ بْنُ عَامِرٍ، عَنْ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنِ ⦗٤٠٩⦘ أَبِي نُعْمٍ، حَدَّثَنِي الْمُغِيرَةُ بْنُ شُعْبَةَ، أَنَّهُ سَافَرَ مَعَ رَسُولِ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ فَدَخَلَ رَسُولُ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ وَادِيًا فَقَضَى حَاجَتَهُ، ثُمَّ خَرَجَ فَتَوَضَّأَ وَمَسَحَ عَلَى خُفَّيْهِ فَقُلْتُ: يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ نَسِيتَ، لَمْ تَخْلَعِ الْخُفَّيْنِ، قَالَ: " كَلَّا بَلْ أَنْتَ نَسِيتَ، بِهَذَا أَمَرَنِي رَبِّي عَزَّ وَجَلَّ " وَرُوِّينَا جَوَازَ الْمَسْحِ عَلَى الْخُفَّيْنِ عَنْ عُمَرَ بْنِ الْخَطَّابِ وَعَلِيِّ بْنِ أَبِي طَالِبٍ وَسَعْدِ بْنِ أَبِي وَقَّاصٍ وَعَبْدِ اللهِ بْنِ مَسْعُودٍ وَعَبْدِ اللهِ بْنِ عَبَّاسٍ وَحُذَيْفَةَ بْنِ الْيَمَانِ وَأَبِي أَيُّوبَ الْأَنْصَارِيِّ وَأَبِي مُوسَى الْأَشْعَرِيِّ وَعَمَّارِ بْنِ يَاسِرٍ وَجَابِرِ بْنِ عَبْدِ اللهِ وَعَمْرِو بْنِ الْعَاصِ وَأَنَسِ بْنِ مَالِكٍ وَسَهْلِ بْنِ سَعْدٍ وَأَبِي مَسْعُودٍ الْأَنْصَارِيِّ وَالْمُغِيرَةِ بْنِ شُعْبَةَ وَالْبَرَاءِ بْنِ عَازِبٍ وَأَبِي سَعِيدٍ الْخُدْرِيِّ وَجَابِرِ بْنِ سَمُرَةَ وَأَبِي أُمَامَةَ الْبَاهِلِيِّ وَعَبْدِ اللهِ بْنِ الْحَارِثِ بْنِ جَزْءٍ وَأَبِي زَيْدٍ الْأَنْصَارِيِّ رَضِيَ اللهُ عَنْهُمْ أَجْمَعِينَ.
Sayyiduna al-Mughirah bin Shu'bah (may Allah be pleased with him) says that he travelled with the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) entered a valley and relieved himself, then came out, performed ablution and wiped over his leather socks. I said: O Messenger of Allah! You have forgotten; you did not take off the leather socks. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Not at all; rather, you have forgotten. This is how my Lord has commanded me." (b) We have narrated reports on the permissibility of wiping from Sayyiduna Umar bin al-Khattab, Ali bin Abi Talib, Sa'd bin Abi Waqqas, Abdullah bin Mas'ud, Abdullah bin Abbas, Hudhayfah bin al-Yaman, Abu Ayyub al-Ansari, Abu Musa al-Ash'ari, Ammar bin Yasir, Jabir bin Abdullah, Amr bin al-As, Anas bin Malik, Sahl bin Sa'd, Abu Mas'ud al-Ansari, al-Mughirah bin Shu'bah, al-Bara' bin Azib, Abu Sa'id al-Khudri, Jabir bin Samurah, Abu Umamah al-Bahili, Abdullah bin al-Harith bin Jaz' and Abu Zayd al-Ansari (may Allah be pleased with them all).
أَخْبَرَنَا أَبُو عَبْدِ اللهِ الْحَافِظُ، أنبأ أَبُو بَكْرٍ الْجِرَاحِيُّ، ثنا يَحْيَى بْنُ شَاسُوَيْهِ، ثنا عَبْدُ الْكَرِيمِ السُّكَّرِيُّ، ثنا وَهْبُ بْنُ زَمْعَةَ، أنبأ عَلِيٌّ الْبَاشَانِيُّ، قَالَ: قَالَ عَبْدُ اللهِ بْنُ الْمُبَارَكِ: " لَيْسَ فِي الْمَسْحِ عَلَى الْخُفَّيْنِ عِنْدَنَا خِلَافٌ وَإِنَّ الرَّجُلَ لَيَسْأَلُنِي عَنِ الْمَسْحِ فَأَرْتَابُ بِهِ أَنْ يَكُونَ صَاحِبَ هَوًى " وَبَلَغَنِي عَنْ أَبِي بَكْرٍ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ إِبْرَاهِيمَ بْنِ الْمُنْذِرِ أَنَّهُ قَالَ عُقَيْبَ هَذِهِ الْحِكَايَةِ وَذَلِكَ أَنَّ كُلَّ مَنْ رُوِيَ عَنْهُ مِنْ أَصْحَابِ رَسُولِ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ أَنَّهُ كَرِهَ الْمَسْحَ عَلَى الْخُفَّيْنِ فَقَدْ رُوِيَ عَنْهُ غَيْرُ ذَلِكَ قَالَ الشَّيْخُ: وَإِنَّمَا بَلَغَنَا كَرَاهِيَةُ ذَلِكَ عَنْ عَلِيٍّ وَعَائِشَةَ وَابْنِ عَبَّاسٍ، أَمَّا الرِّوَايَةُ فِيهِ عَنْ عَلِيٍّ أَنَّهُ قَالَ: سَبَقَ الْكِتَابُ الْمَسْحَ عَلَى الْخُفَّيْنِ وَلَمْ يُرْوَ ذَلِكَ عَنْهُ بِإِسْنَادٍ مَوْصُولٍ يَثْبُتُ مِثْلُهُ، وَأَمَّا عَائِشَةُ فَإِنَّهَا كَرِهَتْ ذَلِكَ، ثُمَّ ثَبَتَ عَنْهَا أَنَّهَا أَحَالَتْ بِعِلْمِ ذَلِكَ عَلَى عَلِيٍّ رَضِيَ اللهُ عَنْهُ وَعَلِيٌّ أَخْبَرَ عَنِ النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ بِالرُّخْصَةِ فِيهِ.
(a) Ali al-Bashani informed me that Abdullah bin al-Mubarak said: There is no disagreement among us about wiping over the leather socks, and when a man asks me about wiping, I suspect that he is a person of heretical desires.
(b) Muhammad bin Ibrahim (Ibn al-Mundhir) writes after this account that every Companion of the Messenger from whom dislike of wiping over the leather socks is reported has also had the opposite reported from him. (c) The Shaykh says: This dislike has reached us only from Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him), Sayyidah Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her) and Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both). (d) On this matter there is the narration from Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Book (of Allah) has taken precedence over wiping over the leather socks. This narration is not reported from him with a connected chain of the kind that is established. (e) Sayyidah Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her) disliked it; then it is established from her that she referred the knowledge of this matter to Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him), and he reported the concession in this matter from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him).

أَخْبَرَنَا بِصِحَّةِ ذَلِكَ أَبُو عَبْدِ اللهِ الْحَافِظُ وَأَبُو سَعِيدِ بْنُ أَبِي عَمْرٍو الْقَاضِي وَأَبُو الْهَيْثَمِ عُتْبَةُ بْنُ أَبِي خَيْثَمَةَ قَالُوا: ثنا أَبُو الْعَبَّاسِ مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ يَعْقُوبَ، ثنا أَحْمَدُ بْنُ عَبْدِ الْجَبَّارِ الْعُطَارِدِيُّ، ثنا أَبُو مُعَاوِيَةَ الضَّرِيرُ، عَنِ الْأَعْمَشِ، عَنِ الْحَكَمِ بْنِ عُتَيْبَةَ، عَنِ الْقَاسِمِ بْنِ مُخَيْمِرَةَ، عَنْ شُرَيْحِ بْنِ هَانِئٍ، قَالَ: سَأَلْتُ عَائِشَةَ عَنِ الْمَسْحِ عَلَى الْخُفَّيْنِ فَقَالَتْ: " ايتِ عَلِيًّا فَإِنَّهُ أَعْلَمُ بِذَلِكَ مِنِّي " فَأَتَيْتُ عَلِيًّا فَسَأَلْتُهُ عَنِ الْمَسْحِ فَقَالَ: " كَانَ رَسُولُ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ يَأْمُرُنَا أَنْ يَمْسَحَ الْمُقِيمُ يَوْمًا وَلَيْلَةً وَالْمُسَافِرُ ثَلَاثًا " ⦗٤١٠⦘ رَوَاهُ مُسْلِمٌ فِي الصَّحِيحِ عَنْ زُهَيْرِ بْنِ حَرْبٍ عَنْ أَبِي مُعَاوِيَةَ وَقَالَ زَيْدُ بْنُ أَبِي أُنَيْسَةَ: ثنا الْحَكَمُ بْنُ عُتَيْبَةَ فَذَكَرَ هَذَا الْإِسْنَادَ وَقَالَ: فَقَالَتْ عَائِشَةُ: مَا لِي بِهَذَا عِلْمٌ وَلَكِنِ ايتِ رَجُلًا فَسَلْهُ فَهُوَ أَعْلَمُ قُلْتُ: وَمَنْ هُوَ؟ قَالَتُ: عَلِيُّ بْنُ أَبِي طَالِبٍ ايتِهِ فَسَلْهُ، ثُمَّ ذَكَرَ نَحْوَهُ.
Shurayh bin Hani' (may Allah have mercy on him) says: I asked Sayyidah Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her) about wiping over the leather socks, and she said: Go to Ali (may Allah be pleased with him), for he knows more about this matter than I do. I came to Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) and asked about wiping, and he said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) used to command us that "the resident should wipe for one day and one night, and the traveller for three days and three nights." (b) In another narration it is stated that Sayyidah Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her) said: I do not have much knowledge of this matter. Go to a man and ask him, for he knows this matter better. I asked: Who is he? Sayyidah Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her) said: He is Ali bin Abi Talib (may Allah be pleased with him); go to him and ask about the matter.
أَخْبَرَنَا أَبُو عَلِيٍّ الرُّوذْبَارِيُّ، أنا عَبْدُ اللهِ بْنُ عَمْرِو بْنِ أَحْمَدَ بْنِ شَوْذَبٍ بِوَاسِطٍ، ثنا شُعَيْبُ بْنُ أَيُّوبَ، ثنا عَمْرُو بْنُ عَوْنٍ، عَنْ شَرِيكٍ، عَنِ الْمِقْدَامِ بْنِ شُرَيْحٍ، عَنْ أَبِيهِ، قَالَ: سَأَلْتُ عَائِشَةَ عَنِ الْمَسْحِ عَلَى الْخُفَّيْنِ فَقَالَتْ: ايتِ عَلِيًّا فَإِنَّهُ كَانَ يُسَافَرُ مَعَ رَسُولِ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ " فَأَتَيْتُهُ فَسَأَلْتُهُ فَقَالَ: " كُنَّا إِذَا سَافَرْنَا مَعَ رَسُولِ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ يَأْمُرُنَا بِالْمَسْحِ عَلَى خِفَافِنَا " وَأَمَّا ابْنُ عَبَّاسٍ رَضِيَ اللهُ عَنْهُ فَإِنَّهُ كَرِهَهُ حِينَ لَمْ يَثْبُتُ لَهُ مَسَحُ النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ عَلَى الْخُفَّيْنِ بَعْدَ نُزُولِ الْمَائِدَةِ فَلَمَّا ثَبَتَ لَهُ رَجَعَ إِلَيْهِ.
Al-Miqdam bin Shurayh narrates from his father that he said: I asked Sayyidah Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her) about wiping over the leather socks, and she said: Go to Ali (may Allah be pleased with him), for he used to travel with the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). I came to him and asked, and he said: When we travelled with the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), he (peace and blessings be upon him) used to command us to wipe over our leather socks.
As for Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him), he disliked it as long as it was not established to him that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) wiped over the leather socks after the revelation of Surah al-Ma'idah; then, when it was established to him, he returned to it.

أَخْبَرَنَا بِصِحَّةِ ذَلِكَ أَبُو مُحَمَّدٍ عَبْدُ اللهِ بْنُ يَحْيَى بْنِ عَبْدِ الْجَبَّارِ السُّكَّرِيُّ بِبَغْدَادَ أنبأ إِسْمَاعِيلُ بْنُ مُحَمَّدٍ الصَّفَّارُ، ثنا أَحْمَدُ بْنُ مَنْصُورٍ الرَّمَادِيُّ، ثنا عَبْدُ الرَّزَّاقِ، أنا ابْنُ جُرَيْجٍ، أَخْبَرَنِي خُصَيْفٌ، أَنَّ مِقْسَمًا مَوْلَى عَبْدِ اللهِ بْنِ الْحَارِثِ أَخْبَرَهُ أَنَّ ابْنَ عَبَّاسٍ أَخْبَرَهُ قَالَ: كُنْتُ أَنَا عِنْدَ عُمَرَ حِينَ سَأَلَهُ سَعْدٌ وَابْنُ عُمَرَ عَنِ الْمَسْحِ عَلَى الْخُفَّيْنِ، فَقَضَى لِسَعْدٍ قَالَ: فَقُلْتُ لِسَعْدٍ: قَدْ عَلِمْنَا أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ مَسَحَ عَلَى خُفَّيْهِ وَلَكِنْ أَقَبْلَ الْمَائِدَةِ أَمْ بَعْدَهَا؟ لَا يُخْبِرُكَ أَحَدٌ أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ مَسَحَ بَعْدَ الْمَائِدَةِ فَسَكَتَ عُمَرُ ".
Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) reported: I was with Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) when Sayyiduna Sa'd (may Allah be pleased with him) and Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) asked about wiping over the leather socks, and he decided in favour of Sayyiduna Sa'd (may Allah be pleased with him). I said to Sayyiduna Sa'd (may Allah be pleased with him): Certainly we know that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) wiped over the leather socks, but was it before the revelation of Surah al-Ma'idah or after it? No one will tell you that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) wiped after the revelation of Surah al-Ma'idah. Then Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) fell silent.
وَأَخْبَرَنَا أَبُو مُحَمَّدٍ، أنا إِسْمَاعِيلُ، ثنا أَحْمَدُ، ثنا عَبْدُ الرَّزَّاقِ، أنا مَعْمَرٌ، عَنِ ابْنِ طَاوُسٍ، عَنْ أَبِيهِ، عَنِ ابْنِ عَبَّاسٍ، قَالَ: إِنَّا عِنْدَ عُمَرَ حِينَ اخْتَصَمَ إِلَيْهِ سَعْدٌ وَابْنُ عُمَرَ فِي الْمَسْحِ عَلَى الْخُفَّيْنِ فَقَضَى لِسَعْدٍ فَقُلْتُ: " لَوْ قُلْتُمْ بِهَذَا فِي السَّفَرِ الْبَعِيدِ وَالْبَرْدِ الشَّدِيدِ قَالَ: فَهَذَا تَجْوِيزٌ مِنْهُ لِلْمَسْحِ فِي السَّفَرِ الْبَعِيدِ وَالْبَرْدِ الشَّدِيدِ بَعْدَ أَنْ كَانَ يُنْكِرُهُ عَلَى الِإطْلَاقِ ⦗٤١١⦘ وَقَدْ رُوِيَ عَنْهُ أَنَّهُ أَفْتَى بِهِ لِلْمُقِيمِ وَالْمُسَافِرِ جَمِيعًا.
Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) says: I was with Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) when Sayyiduna Sa'd (may Allah be pleased with him) and Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) brought their dispute about wiping over the leather socks to him. He decided in favour of Sayyiduna Sa'd (may Allah be pleased with him), so I said: If only you had held this for a long journey and severe cold. This is his permission for wiping on a long journey and in severe cold, after he used to reject it absolutely. It is also reported from him that he gave a fatwa permitting it for the resident and the traveller alike.
أَخْبَرَنَا أَبُو الْحَسَنِ عَلِيُّ بْنُ عَبْدِ اللهِ بْنِ عَلِيٍّ الْبَيْهَقِيُّ، ثنا أَبُو أَحْمَدَ مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ أَحْمَدَ بْنِ الْغِطْرِيفِ بِجُرْجَانَ أنا أَبُو خَلِيفَةَ، ثنا سُلَيْمَانُ بْنُ حَرْبٍ، ثنا شُعْبَةُ، عَنْ قَتَادَةَ، قَالَ: سَمِعْتُ مُوسَى بْنَ سَلَمَةَ، قَالَ: سَأَلْتُ ابْنَ عَبَّاسٍ عَنِ الْمَسْحِ عَلَى الْخُفَّيْنِ فَقَالَ: " لِلْمُسَافِرِ ثَلَاثَةُ أَيَّامٍ وَلَيَالِيهِنَّ وَلِلْمُقِيمِ يَوْمٌ وَلَيْلَةٌ " وَهَذَا إِسْنَادٌ صَحِيحٌ.
Musa bin Salamah (may Allah have mercy on him) says: I asked Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) about wiping over the leather socks, and he said: The traveller (may wipe) for three days and three nights, and the resident for one day and one night. And this chain is sahih (authentic).
أَخْبَرَنَا أَبُو عَبْدِ اللهِ الْحَافِظُ، وَأَبُو بَكْرِ بْنُ الْحَسَنِ قَالَا: ثنا أَبُو الْعَبَّاسِ مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ يَعْقُوبَ، ثنا أَحْمَدُ بْنُ عَبْدِ الْجَبَّارِ، ثنا ابْنُ فُضَيْلٍ، عَنْ فِطْرِ بْنِ خَلِيفَةَ، قَالَ: قُلْتُ لِعَطَاءٍ: يَا أَبَا مُحَمَّدٍ إِنَّ عِكْرِمَةَ كَانَ يَقُولُ: كَانَ ابْنُ عَبَّاسٍ يَقُولُ: سَبَقَ الْكِتَابُ الْمَسْحَ عَلَى الْخُفَّيْنِ، قَالَ: كَذَبَ عِكْرِمَةُ كَانَ ابْنُ عَبَّاسٍ يَقُولُ: " امْسَحْ عَلَى الْخُفَّيْنِ وَإِنْ خَرَجْتَ مِنَ الْخَلَاءِ ". وَكَذَلِكَ رَوَاهُ وَكِيعٌ وَغَيْرُهُ عَنْ فِطْرٍ. وَيُحْتَمَلُ أَنْ يَكُونَ ابْنُ عَبَّاسٍ قَالَ مَا رَوَى عَنْهُ عِكْرِمَةُ، ثُمَّ لَمَّا جَاءَهُ التَّثَبُّتُ عَنِ النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ أَنَّهُ مَسَحَ بَعْدَ نُزُولِ الْمَائِدَةِ قَالَ مَا قَالَ عَطَاءٌ.
Fitr bin Khalifah says: I said to Ata: O Abu Muhammad, Ikrimah used to say that Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) used to say: The Book (the Qur'an) has taken precedence over wiping over the leather socks. He (Ata) said: Ikrimah (may Allah have mercy on him) was mistaken. Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) used to say: Wipe over the leather socks, even if you have come out of the toilet. It is possible that Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) said what Ikrimah (may Allah have mercy on him) narrated from him, and then, when confirmation reached him from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) that he (peace and blessings be upon him) wiped after the revelation of Surah al-Ma'idah, he said what Ata (may Allah have mercy on him) reported.
أَخْبَرَنَا أَبُو عَبْدِ اللهِ الْحَافِظُ، ثنا أَبُو الْعَبَّاسِ مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ يَعْقُوبَ، ثنا أَحْمَدُ بْنُ شَيْبَانَ، ثنا سُفْيَانُ، عَنِ الْأَعْمَشِ، عَنْ إِبْرَاهِيمَ، عَنْ هَمَّامِ بْنِ الْحَارِثِ، أَنَّ جَرِيرًا تَوَضَّأَ مِنْ مَطْهَرَةٍ وَمَسَحَ عَلَى خُفَّيْهِ قَالُوا: تَمْسَحُ عَلَى خُفَّيْكَ؟ قَالَ: إِنِّي رَأَيْتُ رَسُولَ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ يَمْسَحُ عَلَى الْخُفَّيْنِ ". وَكَانَ هَذَا الْحَدِيثُ يُعْجِبُ أَصْحَابَ عَبْدِ اللهِ يَعْنِي ابْنَ مَسْعُودٍ وَيَقُولُونَ: إِنَّمَا كَانَ إِسْلَامُ جَرِيرٍ بَعْدَ نُزُولِ الْمَائِدَةِ رَوَاهُ مُسْلِمٌ فِي الصَّحِيحِ عَنِ ابْنِ أَبِي عُمَرَ عَنْ سُفْيَانَ بْنِ عُيَيْنَةَ.
It is narrated from Hammam bin al-Harith that Sayyiduna Jarir (may Allah be pleased with him) performed ablution from a vessel and wiped over his leather socks. The people said: You wipe over your leather socks? He said: I have seen the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) wiping over the leather socks.
This hadith greatly pleased the companions of Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him), and they used to say that Sayyiduna Jarir (may Allah be pleased with him) accepted Islam after the revelation of Surah al-Ma'idah.

أَخْبَرَنَا أَبُو الطَّاهِرِ الْفَقِيهُ، أنا أَبُو عُثْمَانَ الْبَصْرِيُّ، ثنا أَبُو أَحْمَدَ مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ عَبْدِ الْوَهَّابِ، ثنا إِبْرَاهِيمُ بْنُ عِيسَى، ثنا بَقِيَّةُ، حَدَّثَنِي إِبْرَاهِيمُ بْنُ أَدْهَمَ، ثنا مُقَاتِلُ بْنُ حَيَّانَ، قَالَ: نَزَلْتُ بِشَهْرِ بْنِ حَوْشَبٍ فَتَوَضَّأَ وَمَسَحَ عَلَى خُفَّيْهِ فَقُلْتُ لَهُ: تَمْسَحُ عَلَى خُفَّيْكَ؟ قَالَ: نَزَلَ بِي جَرِيرُ بْنُ عَبْدِ اللهِ فَتَوَضَّأَ وَمَسَحَ عَلَى خُفَّيْهِ فَقُلْتُ لَهُ: تَمْسَحُ عَلَى خُفَّيْكَ؟ قَالَ: " نَعَمْ رَأَيْتُ رَسُولَ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ يَمْسَحُ عَلَى خُفَّيْهِ " قَالَ: قُلْتُ: بَعْدَ نُزُولِ الْمَائِدَةِ؟ قَالَ: مَا أَسْلَمْتُ إِلَّا بَعْدَ نُزُولِ الْمَائِدَةِ " ⦗٤١٢⦘ قَالَ أَبُو يُحْمِدَ: قَالَ إِبْرَاهِيمُ بْنُ أَدْهَمَ: مَا سَمِعْتُ فِي الْمَسْحِ عَلَى الْخُفَّيْنِ بِحَدِيثٍ أَحْسَنَ مِنْ هَذَا.
Muqatil bin Hayyan said: I came to Shahr bin Hawshab; he performed ablution and wiped over his leather socks. I said to him: Do you wipe over leather socks? He said: Jarir bin Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him) came to me; he performed ablution and wiped over his leather socks. I said to him: Do you wipe over leather socks? He said: "Yes, I saw the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) wiping over his leather socks." I said: After the revelation of Surah al-Ma'idah? He said: "I accepted Islam after the revelation of Surah al-Ma'idah."

Sayyiduna Jarir bin Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him) said: I saw the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) wiping over his leather socks. They said: After the revelation of Surah al-Ma'idah? Jarir (may Allah be pleased with him) said: I accepted Islam after the revelation of Surah al-Ma'idah.
