Urwah (may Allah have mercy on him) says concerning the story of Uhud and the injury that befell the face of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him): Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) went to al-Mihras (a well), and water was brought in a vessel. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) intended to drink from it, but he sensed a foul smell and said: "This is foul-smelling water." Then he (peace and blessings be upon him) rinsed his mouth with it, and Fatimah (may Allah be pleased with her) washed the blood off her father (peace and blessings be upon him).

Ubaydullah bin Ka'b bin Malik says that when the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) reached the mouth of the mountain pass, Sayyiduna Ali bin Abi Talib (may Allah be pleased with him) went out and filled his leather shield with water from the spring hollowed in the rock (al-Mihras), then came to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) so that he could drink. He (peace and blessings be upon him) sensed a foul smell, so he left it and did not drink from it; he washed the blood from his face and poured water over his head, and he (peace and blessings be upon him) was saying: "May the wrath of Allah be upon the one who bloodied the face of the Prophet."
