Sayyiduna Abu al-Juhaym (may Allah be pleased with him) said that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) came from the direction of the well of Jamal, and a man met him (peace and blessings be upon him) and greeted him (peace and blessings be upon him), but he (peace and blessings be upon him) did not return his greeting until he (peace and blessings be upon him) came to a wall and wiped his face and hands; then he (peace and blessings be upon him) returned the greeting.

Layth narrated it with the same chain and with the same meaning, saying that he (peace and blessings be upon him) wiped his face and forearms, then returned his greeting.
Hadith Referenceالسنن الكبرى للبيهقي / كتاب الطهارة / 991
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ibn al-Simmah (may Allah be pleased with him) that he said: I passed by the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) while he (peace and blessings be upon him) was urinating. I greeted him (peace and blessings be upon him), but he did not return my greeting. Then he stood facing a wall and scratched it with a stick that he had with him, then placed his hands on the wall and wiped his face and forearms, then returned the greeting.
(b) This narration is a supporting witness (shahid) for the narration of Abu Salih, the scribe of al-Layth, except that it is munqati' (its chain is broken): Abd al-Rahman bin Hurmuz al-A'raj did not hear it from Ibn al-Simmah; he heard it only from Umayr, the freed slave of Ibn Abbas, from Ibn al-Simmah.
(c) The hadith scholars differ about the 'adalah (reliability) of both Ibrahim bin Muhammad bin Abi Yahya al-Aslami and Abu al-Huwayrith Abd al-Rahman bin Mu'awiyah, except that their narration mentioning the forearms has a supporting witness in the hadith of Sayyiduna Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both).

Nafi' narrated: I went with Ibn Umar to Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) for some matter. When he had completed his matter, he narrated this hadith: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) was in one of the streets of Madinah; he (peace and blessings be upon him) had gone out to relieve himself or to urinate. A man greeted him (peace and blessings be upon him), but he (peace and blessings be upon him) did not return his greeting. Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) struck his palms (on the ground) and wiped his face once, then struck his palms a second time and wiped his forearms up to the elbows, and then said: "Nothing prevented me from returning your greeting except that I was not in a state of ablution," or he said: "I was not in a state of purity." (b) Some hadith scholars rejected Muhammad bin Thabit al-Abdi's narrating it as marfu' (attributed to the Prophet). A group says that it is the act of Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with him), and others say that the act of Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) was only the tayammum. This incident is also narrated as marfu' from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) by Abu al-Juhaym bin al-Harith bin al-Simmah and others.
(c) It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) that a man passed by the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) while he (peace and blessings be upon him) was urinating. But this narration is abridged; the narration of Yazid bin al-Had is complete.

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) was returning after relieving himself when a man greeted him near the well of Jamal, but he (peace and blessings be upon him) did not return the greeting. Then he came to a wall, placed his hand on the wall, wiped his face and hands, and then returned the man's greeting.
This narration is a supporting witness for the narration of Muhammad bin Thabit al-Abdi, except that he preserved the mention of the forearms in it, which no one else established. He and Ibn al-Had both related the hadith mentioning his (peace and blessings be upon him) tayammum and then his returning the greeting, even though al-Dahhak bin Uthman abridged it; and Ibn Umar's own practice of tayammum on the face and the forearms up to the elbows is a witness to the soundness of Muhammad bin Thabit's narration, not contradicting it. Yahya bin Ma'in said about Muhammad bin Thabit al-Abdi: "Laysa bihi ba's" (There is no harm in him). In this hadith he does not deserve to be rejected, for the reasons I have mentioned; a group of imams narrated it from him, such as Yahya bin Yahya, Mu'alla bin Mansur, Sa'id bin Mansur and others, and Muslim bin Ibrahim praised him and narrated it from him; and from Ibn Umar it is well known.

Nafi', the freed slave of Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both), said: Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) and I came from al-Juruf, and when we were at the place called al-Mirbad, Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) dismounted, performed tayammum with clean earth, and wiped his face and his hands up to the elbows, then offered the prayer.
Hadith Referenceالسنن الكبرى للبيهقي / كتاب الطهارة / 995
Sayyiduna Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said: Tayammum consists of two strikes: one strike for the face and one strike for the palms up to the elbows. This narration is mawquf (stopping) at Sayyiduna Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with him).
Sulayman bin Abi Dawud al-Harrani and Sulayman bin Arqam, who narrated it from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), are both da'if (weak); their narration is not used as evidence.
Hadith Referenceالسنن الكبرى للبيهقي / كتاب الطهارة / 997
Sayyiduna Jabir (may Allah be pleased with him) said: A man came and said: I became junub, and I rolled about in the dust (for tayammum). He said: "Strike your hands on the soil." So he struck his hands on the ground and wiped his face, then struck his hands (on the ground) again and wiped his hands up to the elbows.
This is how he narrated it, and its chain is sahih (authentic), except that it does not make clear the instruction given to him for this.
Hadith Referenceالسنن الكبرى للبيهقي / كتاب الطهارة / 998
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Jabir (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Tayammum is one strike for the face and one strike for the two hands up to the elbows."
Hadith Referenceالسنن الكبرى للبيهقي / كتاب الطهارة / 999
The grandfather of al-Rabi' bin Badr narrates from a man called al-Asla' (may Allah be pleased with him) that he said: I used to serve the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). Jibril (peace be upon him) came with the verse of tayammum, and the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) showed me how wiping is done for tayammum: "I struck my hands on the ground once and wiped my face, then struck them on the ground and wiped my hands up to and including the elbows."
(b) Al-Rabi' bin Badr is weak. (c) We have narrated this view from the Successors, namely Salim bin Abdullah, al-Hasan al-Basri, al-Sha'bi and Ibrahim al-Nakha'i (may Allah have mercy on them).
In this narration al-Rabi' bin Badr is weak, but he is not alone in narrating it.
