Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Zayd (may Allah be pleased with him) says that he saw the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) performing ablution. He (peace and blessings be upon him) took water for his ears other than the water he (peace and blessings be upon him) had taken for his head (i.e. he took fresh water for wiping).
This chain is sahih (authentic).

Ibn Wahb narrates with an authentic chain that he saw the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) performing ablution. Then, describing his (peace and blessings be upon him) ablution, he said that he (peace and blessings be upon him) wiped his head with water other than what was left over on his hands, but he did not mention the ears.
(b) The second narration is more authentic than the first.

It is narrated from Nafi' (may Allah have mercy on him) that Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) used to take water with his fingers for wiping his ears. As for the narration transmitted from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him): "The ears are part of the head", this narration is transmitted with weak chains, which we have mentioned in (our book) al-Khilaf.

Sayyiduna Abu Umamah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) performed ablution: he washed his face and hands three times, wiped his head, and said: "The ears are part of the head." And he (peace and blessings be upon him) used to wipe the inner corners of his eyes.
(b) This hadith is criticised in two respects: 1. some of its narrators are weak; 2. there is doubt about whether it is marfu' (attributed to the Prophet).
(c) Yahya bin Ma'in (may Allah have mercy on him) says that Sinan bin Rabi'ah, who narrates from Hammad bin Zayd, is not strong.
(d) Shahr bin Hawshab was mentioned in the presence of Ibn Awn (may Allah have mercy on him), and he said: People have criticised Shahr.
(e) Shu'bah (may Allah have mercy on him) says that Shahr bin Hawshab accompanied a man from the people of Syria and stole his bag.
(f) Abu Bukayr (may Allah have mercy on him) says that Shahr bin Hawshab was in charge of the public treasury (Bayt al-Mal), and he stole a bag of dirhams, so someone said: Shahr has sold his religion for a bag; O Shahr, after you, how can the Qur'an reciters be trusted?
(g) Musa bin Harun (may Allah have mercy on him) says that this hadith is not established; Shahr bin Hawshab in it is a weak narrator. Imam al-Bayhaqi (may Allah have mercy on him) says: There is doubt about this narration being marfu'.

Sayyiduna Abu Umamah (may Allah be pleased with him) described the manner of ablution of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). He says that whenever he (peace and blessings be upon him) performed ablution, he would wipe the inner corners of his eyes with water. And Sayyiduna Abu Umamah (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "The ears are part of the head."
(b) Sulayman bin Harb says: "The ears are part of the head" is only the saying of Sayyiduna Abu Umamah (may Allah be pleased with him); whoever says otherwise has altered it (or a word to that effect that Sulayman said), meaning: he has erred.

Sayyiduna Abu Umamah (may Allah be pleased with him) mentioned the ablution of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). He says that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) used to wipe the inner corners of his eyes, and he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "The ears are part of the head."
(b) Sulayman bin Harb (may Allah have mercy on him) says: This is the saying of Sayyiduna Abu Umamah (may Allah be pleased with him). (c) Hammad (may Allah have mercy on him) says: I do not know whether this is the saying of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) or of Sayyiduna Abu Umamah (may Allah be pleased with him).
(d) Qutaybah (may Allah have mercy on him), narrating from Sinan bin Rabi'ah, said: In my book the word is "al-ma'qayn", and it is the same in the narration of Ibn Dasah (may Allah have mercy on him).
(e) Abu Sulayman (may Allah have mercy on him) explained "al-ma'qayn" as the corner of the eye next to the nose, which is where tears come out. In the previous narrations the wiping of the head and both ears is mentioned in brief, and its manner is given in this narration.
