Sayyiduna Abu Umamah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) performed ablution: he washed his face and hands three times, wiped his head, and said: "The ears are part of the head." And he (peace and blessings be upon him) used to wipe the inner corners of his eyes.
(b) This hadith is criticised in two respects: 1. some of its narrators are weak; 2. there is doubt about whether it is marfu' (attributed to the Prophet).
(c) Yahya bin Ma'in (may Allah have mercy on him) says that Sinan bin Rabi'ah, who narrates from Hammad bin Zayd, is not strong.
(d) Shahr bin Hawshab was mentioned in the presence of Ibn Awn (may Allah have mercy on him), and he said: People have criticised Shahr.
(e) Shu'bah (may Allah have mercy on him) says that Shahr bin Hawshab accompanied a man from the people of Syria and stole his bag.
(f) Abu Bukayr (may Allah have mercy on him) says that Shahr bin Hawshab was in charge of the public treasury (Bayt al-Mal), and he stole a bag of dirhams, so someone said: Shahr has sold his religion for a bag; O Shahr, after you, how can the Qur'an reciters be trusted?
(g) Musa bin Harun (may Allah have mercy on him) says that this hadith is not established; Shahr bin Hawshab in it is a weak narrator. Imam al-Bayhaqi (may Allah have mercy on him) says: There is doubt about this narration being marfu'.
