Muhammad bin Abd al-Rahman bin al-Aswad (may Allah have mercy on him) said that a man from Iraq said to him: "Ask Urwah bin al-Zubayr (may Allah have mercy on him) for me about a man who enters ihram for Hajj: when he performs tawaf of the House, does he leave ihram or not? If he says to you that he does not, then tell him that a man says that he does." He said: I asked him, and he said: "Whoever has entered ihram for Hajj does not leave ihram until he completes the Hajj." I said: "A man says that (he does)." He said: "What an evil thing he has said." That man met me and asked me, and I told him everything. He said: "Tell him that a man says the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) did that, and what about Asma (may Allah be pleased with her) and al-Zubayr (may Allah be pleased with him), who did that?" He said: I came and said this to him, and he asked: "Who said this?" I said: "I do not know who he is." He said: "What is the matter with him that he does not come to me and ask me himself? I think he is an Iraqi." I said: "I do not know." He said: "He has lied. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) performed Hajj, and Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her) told me that the first thing he (peace and blessings be upon him) did on coming to Makkah was to perform ablution and then circumambulate the House. Then Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) performed Hajj, and the first thing he did was the tawaf of the House. Then Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) did the same. Then Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him) performed Hajj, and he too first did the tawaf of the House, and nothing besides it. Then Mu'awiyah (may Allah be pleased with him) and Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both). Then I performed Hajj with my father al-Zubayr bin al-Awwam (may Allah be pleased with him), and he too first did the tawaf of the House, and nothing else with it. Then I saw the Muhajirun and the Ansar (may Allah be pleased with them) doing the same, and after that there was nothing else. Then the last one I saw doing this was Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both), and he did not break it off with an Umrah. And here is Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) among them; why do they not ask him? And none of those who have passed away would begin with anything, when they first set foot (in Makkah), before the tawaf of the House, and then they would not leave ihram. And I saw my mother and my maternal aunt (may Allah be pleased with them both): when they arrived, they did nothing before circumambulating the House, and then they did not leave ihram. And my mother (may Allah be pleased with her) told me that she, my maternal aunt (may Allah be pleased with her), al-Zubayr (may Allah be pleased with him) and so-and-so and so-and-so came for an Umrah only, and when they touched the Corner, they left ihram. And what he has said is a lie."
