It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "A man called al-Sufyani will emerge from a remote part of Damascus, and most of his followers will be from the tribe of Banu Kalb. He will kill so much that he will rip open the bellies of women and kill children. The tribe of Qays will gather to confront them, but he will wipe them out so that no one will remain to protect them. Then a man from my family will appear in the Haram (Makkah). Al-Sufyani will send one of his armies towards him, but that army will be defeated. Then al-Sufyani himself will advance towards him with all his forces, until, when they reach a barren plain (Bayda') of the earth, they will be swallowed up by the earth, and none of them will survive except the one who will give news of them."

It is narrated from Hittan bin Abdullah al-Raqashi that they were returning from a military expedition with Sayyiduna Abu Musa al-Ash'ari (may Allah be pleased with him). When they camped at a place, he said: We used to discuss that before the Hour there will be 'harj'. The people asked: O Amir, what is meant by harj? He said: "Killing." We said: Even more than what we kill now? We kill more than one hundred thousand (enemies) in a year, by Allah's will. He said: "It will not be the killing of the polytheists; rather, it will be your killing of one another." We said: Will our senses be intact at that time? Sayyiduna Abu Musa (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "The minds of most of the people of that time will be taken away, and there will remain behind people whose worth will be like dust. Most of them will think that they are upon something of the truth. By Allah, in that situation which we read of in the Book of Allah and in the sayings of our Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), I find no way of escape for myself and for you except that we leave this world as innocent as we entered it."
