Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 8800

It is narrated from Hittan bin Abdullah al-Raqashi that they were returning from a military expedition with Sayyiduna Abu Musa al-Ash'ari (may Allah be pleased with him). When they camped at a place, he said: We used to discuss that before the Hour there will be 'harj'. The people asked: O Amir, what is meant by harj? He said: "Killing." We said: Even more than what we kill now? We kill more than one hundred thousand (enemies) in a year, by Allah's will. He said: "It will not be the killing of the polytheists; rather, it will be your killing of one another." We said: Will our senses be intact at that time? Sayyiduna Abu Musa (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "The minds of most of the people of that time will be taken away, and there will remain behind people whose worth will be like dust. Most of them will think that they are upon something of the truth. By Allah, in that situation which we read of in the Book of Allah and in the sayings of our Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), I find no way of escape for myself and for you except that we leave this world as innocent as we entered it."
This hadith is sahih (authentic) on the condition of the two Shaykhs, but they did not record it.

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Grading: Its chain is sahih.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): (Narrators): Humayd is Ibn Abi Humayd al-Tawil, and al-Hasan is al-Basri.
Reference / Source: Al-Bukhari recorded it in "al-Tarikh al-Kabir" (2/12) and al-Bazzar in his "Musnad" (3049) through two routes from al-Mu'tamir bin Sulayman, with this chain.
Reference / Source: Ahmad (32/19499) and Ibn Hibban (6710) recorded it through Yunus bin Muhammad, from Hammad bin Salamah, from Yunus bin 'Ubayd, Thabit, Habib bin al-Shahid and Humayd al-Tawil, from al-Hasan, from Hittan, from Abu Musa as marfu'.
Reference / Source: Ahmad likewise recorded it as marfu' at (19492) and (19717) from 'Abd al-Samad and 'Affan, from Hammad bin Salamah, from 'Ali bin Zayd, from Hittan, with it.
Reference / Source: It has also already passed with the author (al-Hakim) as marfu' at number (8598) through Aban, from al-Hasan, from Abu Musa.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Its chain (of that earlier narration) is broken (munqati').
Technical note / Defect ('illah): The stated number of polytheists killed in a year is objectionable (nakarah) if it was said by the Companions to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), for nothing in his biography (peace and blessings be upon him) or in all his military expeditions comes close to this number. In most narrations of this hadith it is left unspecified (mubham), and that is more authentic; unless this was said to Abu Musa al-Ash'ari by his companions, in which case it is possible, because of the many conquests and expeditions at that time.
Important point: On that basis, only the first part of this hadith is marfu' and the rest is mawquf; and Allah the Exalted knows best.
