It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "A man called al-Sufyani will emerge from a remote part of Damascus, and most of his followers will be from the tribe of Banu Kalb. He will kill so much that he will rip open the bellies of women and kill children. The tribe of Qays will gather to confront them, but he will wipe them out so that no one will remain to protect them. Then a man from my family will appear in the Haram (Makkah). Al-Sufyani will send one of his armies towards him, but that army will be defeated. Then al-Sufyani himself will advance towards him with all his forces, until, when they reach a barren plain (Bayda') of the earth, they will be swallowed up by the earth, and none of them will survive except the one who will give news of them."
This hadith is sahih (authentic) on the condition of the two Shaykhs, but they did not record it.

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Note / Clarification: It is like this in "Talkhis al-Dhahabi", and it is clear, while in (Z) and (B) it reads: "فيبلغ السفياني وهو في إلى جند من جنده", and in (K) and (M): "فيبعث إلى جند من جنده".
Grading: This narration is gharib munkar. Technical note / Defect ('illah): The narrators of its chain are trustworthy, except that al-Walid bin Muslim was known for tadlis al-taswiyah, which is to drop from the chain his shaykh's shaykh or someone above him, and he did this with al-Awza'i. In his biography in Ibn 'Asakir's "Tarikh Dimashq" (63/291) it is stated that al-Haytham bin Kharijah said to him: "You have spoiled the hadith of al-Awza'i", and mentioned to him that al-Awza'i would place between himself and some narrators weak men who narrated munkar reports, and then al-Walid would come and drop them. Al-Haytham said to him: "What makes you do this?" He said: "I hold al-Awza'i too noble to narrate from the likes of these!" Important point: We (the editors) say: al-Walid is alone in narrating this report from al-Awza'i, and his being alone in it makes us think it most likely that he committed tadlis in it; and we have not found it recorded by anyone other than the author (al-Hakim). Reference / Source: There has already passed with him (the author), at numbers (8653) and (8740), a reference to this Sufyani, from the hadiths of Ibn Mas'ud and 'Ali bin Abi Talib (may Allah be pleased with them both), and they are both extremely weak (wahin) reports, as has already been explained. Reference / Source: On the story of the army that attacks the House (the Ka'bah) being swallowed by the earth, see what passed at number (8528) from the hadith of Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) through another route from him.
