It is narrated from Sayyiduna Thawban (may Allah be pleased with him) that he heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) saying: "Indeed, my Lord gathered up the earth for me so that I saw its easts and its wests, and I was given the two treasures: the red (gold) and the white (silver). And indeed the dominion of my Ummah will reach as far as the earth was gathered up for me. I asked my Lord for my Ummah that He not destroy it by a general famine, and Allah granted me that; I asked that He not set over them an enemy from other than themselves (non-Muslims) who would uproot them, and Allah granted me that too; and I asked that He not make them taste the fighting of one another, and Allah withheld that from me. My Lord said to me: 'O Muhammad! When I make a decree, it cannot be turned back. I have granted you for your Ummah that I will not destroy them by a general famine, nor set over them an enemy from other than themselves who would destroy them all, even if the enemies gathered against them from all the regions of the earth, until they themselves destroy one another and take one another captive.' And I fear for my Ummah nothing but misguiding imams (leaders). The Hour will not be established until some tribes of my Ummah join the polytheists and worship idols. And when the sword falls upon my Ummah, it will not be lifted from it until the Day of Resurrection." He (peace and blessings be upon him) also said: "Whatever is (to happen) is within a hundred years. And thirty liars (false claimants) will appear in my Ummah, each of whom will claim that he is a prophet, whereas I am the Seal of the Prophets and there is no prophet after me. And a group of my Ummah will always keep fighting upon the truth and remain dominant (over their opponents); those who forsake them will not be able to harm them, until the command of Allah (the Hour) comes." The narrator says that he (peace and blessings be upon him) also said: "No one among the people of Paradise will pluck anything from its fruits except that Allah Almighty will produce another fruit like it in its place." And he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Of the dinars a man spends, the one with the greatest reward is the dinar he spends on his family, then the dinar he spends on his horse in the path of Allah, then the dinar he spends on his companions in the path of Allah." And he (peace and blessings be upon him) declared the matter of begging (asking people) to be very grave. He also said: "When the Day of Resurrection comes, the people of the Jahiliyyah will come carrying their idols on their backs. Their Lord will ask them: 'Whom did you use to worship?' They will say: 'Our Lord! You did not send any messenger to us, nor did anyone come to us to command us. Had You sent a messenger to us, we would have been the most obedient of Your servants.' Then their Lord will say to them: 'If I give you a command, will you obey Me?' They will say: 'Yes.' So Allah will take firm covenants from them on that, then He will command them to head for Hell and enter it. So they will set off until, when they reach it, they will see its raging and roaring and become afraid, and they will return to their Lord and say: 'Our Lord! We are afraid of it.' Allah will say: 'Did you not give Me your covenants that you would obey Me? Head for it.' They will go again and, on seeing it, become afraid and return and say: 'Our Lord! We do not have the strength to enter it.' Allah will say: 'Enter it in humiliation and disgrace.'" Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Had they entered it the first time, it would have become cool and safe for them."
This hadith is sahih (authentic) on the condition of the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim), but they did not record it with this wording; Imam Muslim recorded the hadith of Mu'adh bin Hisham from Qatadah, by way of Abu Qilabah, from Sayyiduna Thawban in abridged form.
