The soul of Abd al-Rahman bin Awf (may Allah be pleased with him) returning after it had departed

Sayyiduna Ibrahim bin Abd al-Rahman bin Awf (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that during his illness his father, Sayyiduna Abd al-Rahman bin Awf (may Allah be pleased with him), fell unconscious. His family thought that his soul had departed, so much so that the people got up from beside him and covered him with a cloth. His wife, Sayyidah Umm Kulthum bint Uqbah (may Allah be pleased with her), went out towards the mosque to seek help from Allah through patience and prayer. He remained in that state of unconsciousness for a while; then, when he came round, the first thing that came from his tongue was the takbir, and then the members of the household and the people around also said the takbir. Then he asked them: "Did I just fall unconscious?" They said: "Yes." He said: "You have spoken the truth. During this unconsciousness of mine two men came to me, one of whom was very severe and harsh. The two of them said: Come, we will take your case before Allah, the Mighty, the Trustworthy. They took me along until we met another man, who asked: Where are you taking him? They said: We are taking his case before Allah, the Mighty, the Trustworthy. That man said: Take him back, for he is among those for whom Allah wrote happiness and forgiveness while they were still in their mothers' wombs, and he will yet live with his children for a period." So he lived for one month after this incident and then passed away, and in that same year Sayyiduna Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him) led the Hajj.

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abd al-Rahman bin Awf (may Allah be pleased with him) that (in the days of the Jahiliyyah) Umayyah bin Khalaf said to him: "Correspond with me by the name with which you used to correspond with me before, that is, Abd Amr."

Ibrahim bin Sa'd narrates from his grandfather that he heard Sayyiduna Sa'd bin Abi Waqqas (may Allah be pleased with him) say at the death of Sayyiduna Abd al-Rahman bin Awf (may Allah be pleased with him): "Alas, what a great mountain has departed!"
