Abu Salamah and Muhammad bin Ibrahim al-Taymi narrate that Sayyiduna Umar bin al-Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him) passed by a man who was reciting this verse: "And the first forerunners among the Muhajirun and the Ansar and those who followed them with excellence - Allah is pleased with them and they are pleased with Him" [Surah al-Tawbah: 100]. Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) stopped there and called him over. When he came, Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) asked: "Who taught you this verse?" He replied: "Ubayy bin Ka'b (may Allah be pleased with him) taught it to me." Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "Take us to him." So they went to him and found him reclining on a cushion, combing the hair of his head. Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) greeted him with salam, and he returned the greeting. Then Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) asked: "O Abu al-Mundhir! Did you teach this man this verse?" He said: "Yes, I received it directly from the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him)." Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) asked again: "Did you really learn it from the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him)?" He said: "Yes, I received it from the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him)." This same question was asked three times, and the third time he said in anger: "Yes, by Allah! Allah revealed it to Jibril, and Jibril revealed it to Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him), and in this revelation neither al-Khattab nor his son was consulted." Hearing this, Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) went out with his hands raised, calling out: "Allahu Akbar, Allahu Akbar (Allah is the Greatest, Allah is the Greatest)."

! It is narrated from Sayyiduna Sa'id bin al-Musayyab that when Sayyiduna Umar bin al-Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him) came to this verse: "Those who believe and do not mix their faith with wrongdoing" [Surah al-An'am: 82], he came to Sayyiduna Ubayy bin Ka'b (may Allah be pleased with him) and asked: "Who among us is there who has never done wrong?" Ubayy bin Ka'b said: "O Commander of the Faithful! What is meant by it is shirk (associating partners with Allah). Have you not heard the saying of Luqman to his son: 'O my dear son! Do not associate anything with Allah; indeed, associating others with Him is a tremendous wrong.' [Surah Luqman: 13]?!"
