Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 5415

Abu Ubaydah Ma'mar bin al-Muthanna narrates that the lineage of Sayyiduna Abd al-Rahman bin Awf (may Allah be pleased with him) is as follows: Abd al-Rahman bin Awf bin Abd Awf bin al-Harith bin Zuhrah bin Kilab bin Murrah bin Ka'b bin Lu'ayy bin Ghalib bin Fihr bin Malik.

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): (1) (Mentioned in the chain) Abu Khalifah al-Qadi: he is al-Fadl bin al-Hubab al-Jumahi.
Reference / Source: This narration is in al-Tabarani's "al-Mu'jam al-Kabir" (252) via Abd al-Malik bin Hisham, from Abu Ubaydah Ma'mar bin al-Muthanna.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): But in his version, in his lineage the name of his father's grandfather appears as "Abd al-Harith" instead of "al-Harith".
General principle: Likewise said more than one of the experts in genealogy, such as Ibn Sa'd (3/ 115), Khalifah bin Khayyat in his "al-Tabaqat" (p. 15), and al-Shafi'i, as Ibn Abi Hatim cited from him in "Adab al-Shafi'i" (p. 198).
Reference / Source: Imam Muslim also gave him this name in "al-Kuna wa al-Asma'" (2875), and Imam al-Nasa'i, Abu Nasr al-Bukhari and Abu Ahmad al-Hakim, as Ibn Asakir cited from all of them (35/ 244, 246 and 247), also named him "Abd al-Harith".
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Some scholars call him "Abd bin al-Harith", such as Ibn Ishaq, and Ibn Sa'd also sometimes said so. This is also the view of Mus'ab al-Zubayri in his book "Nasab Quraysh" (pp. 137, 265 and 273).
Important point: This is contrary to what the author (al-Hakim) cited from him immediately afterwards, where he named him "Abd al-Rahman bin al-Harith".
