It is narrated from Sayyiduna Sa'id bin al-Musayyab that when Sayyiduna Umar bin al-Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him) came to this verse: "Those who believe and do not mix their faith with wrongdoing" [Surah al-An'am: 82], he came to Sayyiduna Ubayy bin Ka'b (may Allah be pleased with him) and asked: "Who among us is there who has never done wrong?" Ubayy bin Ka'b said: "O Commander of the Faithful! What is meant by it is shirk (associating partners with Allah). Have you not heard the saying of Luqman to his son: 'O my dear son! Do not associate anything with Allah; indeed, associating others with Him is a tremendous wrong.' [Surah Luqman: 13]?!"

Grading: (1) This narration is "hasan". Technical note / Defect ('illah): Although this chain in itself is "da'if" because of the weakness of "Ali bin Zayd" (Ibn Jud'an), since this narration is also narrated through another "mursal" chain, on the basis of these supporting reports the report reaches the grade of "hasan", in sha' Allah. Reference / Source: Muhammad bin Nasr al-Marwazi recorded this narration in "Ta'zim Qadr al-Salah" (579) from Muhammad bin Ubayd bin Hisab, from Hammad bin Zayd, with this same chain. Reference / Source: Imam al-Tabari recorded it in his "Tafsir" (7/ 257) via Jarir bin Hazim, from Ali bin Zayd, with this same chain. Reference / Source: Muhammad bin Nasr (578) and al-Tabari (7/ 257) narrated it via Hammad bin Salamah, from Ali bin Zayd, from Yusuf bin Mihran, from Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both): that Umar bin al-Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him) … (then the narrator mentioned the text). Technical note / Defect ('illah): Except that he (Hammad bin Salamah) made it a narration of Yusuf bin Mihran from Ibn Abbas! (whereas in the previous narrations the chain was different). Reference / Source: Imam al-Tabari (7/ 257) narrated it in similar form through two routes from Abu Uthman Amr bin Salim as "mursal". Grading: And the narrators of both routes are acceptable (la ba'sa bihim). Corroborating chains and supporting reports: The like of it is established from the hadith of Abd Allah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), found in Sahih al-Bukhari (3360), Sahih Muslim (124) and other books. (3689). Corroborating chains and supporting reports: It is likewise established as a statement of Abu Bakr al-Siddiq (may Allah be pleased with him), as preceded with the author (al-Hakim) at no. (3689).
