Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 5413

Abu Salamah and Muhammad bin Ibrahim al-Taymi narrate that Sayyiduna Umar bin al-Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him) passed by a man who was reciting this verse: "And the first forerunners among the Muhajirun and the Ansar and those who followed them with excellence - Allah is pleased with them and they are pleased with Him" [Surah al-Tawbah: 100]. Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) stopped there and called him over. When he came, Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) asked: "Who taught you this verse?" He replied: "Ubayy bin Ka'b (may Allah be pleased with him) taught it to me." Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "Take us to him." So they went to him and found him reclining on a cushion, combing the hair of his head. Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) greeted him with salam, and he returned the greeting. Then Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) asked: "O Abu al-Mundhir! Did you teach this man this verse?" He said: "Yes, I received it directly from the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him)." Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) asked again: "Did you really learn it from the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him)?" He said: "Yes, I received it from the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him)." This same question was asked three times, and the third time he said in anger: "Yes, by Allah! Allah revealed it to Jibril, and Jibril revealed it to Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him), and in this revelation neither al-Khattab nor his son was consulted." Hearing this, Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) went out with his hands raised, calling out: "Allahu Akbar, Allahu Akbar (Allah is the Greatest, Allah is the Greatest)."

Grading: (1) This narration is "hasan". Technical note / Defect ('illah): The narrators of this chain are "la ba'sa bihim" (acceptable), but the chain is "mursal", because neither Muhammad bin Ibrahim al-Taymi nor Abu Salamah (the son of Abd al-Rahman bin Awf) lived in the time of Umar bin al-Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him). Details of the narration: What Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) found problematic is the reading of ﴿وَالَّذِينَ﴾ in the verse (Surah al-Tawbah: 100) with the "waw" before it, making "the Ansar" conjoined to "the Muhajirun". Umar himself used to read it as (wa al-Ansaru alladhina), i.e. with the word "Ansar" in the nominative (raf') and dropping the "waw" before the relative pronoun (alladhina), so that "alladhina" becomes an attribute of the Ansar. This story and this particular reading of Umar are narrated from Umar through several other routes as "mursal". Some narrations also mention that Zayd bin Thabit (may Allah be pleased with him) read this verse as Ubayy bin Ka'b (may Allah be pleased with him) did (with the waw), and that Umar eventually returned to their reading.
Reference / Source: Ishaq bin Rahwayh recorded this narration in his "Musnad", as found in al-Hafiz Ibn Hajar's "al-Matalib al-'Aliyah" (no. 3618). It is narrated via Abdah bin Sulayman ← Muhammad bin Amr bin Alqamah ← Abu Salamah bin Abd al-Rahman (alone).
Reference / Source: Ibn Wahb narrated this in the Tafsir section of his book "al-Jami'" (2/ 1), and Imam al-Tabari in his "Tafsir" (11/ 8), via Muhammad bin Ka'b al-Qurazi as "mursal". Details of the narration: But in this route the exchange between Ubayy and Umar at the end is not mentioned; instead there is Umar's statement: "I used to think that we had been raised to a rank which no one after us could reach." Ubayy said: "Not so! (Those who come later also have a rank.) The confirmation of this is in the opening verse of Surah al-Jumu'ah: ﴿وَآخَرِينَ مِنْهُمْ لَمَّا يَلْحَقُوا بِهِمْ﴾ (and to others of them who have not yet joined them) to the end; and in Surah al-Hashr: ﴿وَالَّذِينَ جَاءُوا مِنْ بَعْدِهِمْ يَقُولُونَ رَبَّنَا اغْفِرْ لَنَا وَلإِخْوَانِنَا الَّذِينَ سَبَقُونَا بِالْإِيمَانِ﴾ (and those who came after them say: Our Lord, forgive us and our brothers who preceded us in faith); and in Surah al-Anfal: ﴿وَالَّذِينَ آمَنُوا مِنْ بَعْدُ وَهَاجَرُوا وَجَاهَدُوا مَعَكُمْ فَأُولَئِكَ مِنْكُمْ﴾ (and those who believed afterwards and emigrated and strove along with you, they are of you) to the end of the verse."
Reference / Source: Ibn Wahb also recorded a similar narration in the Tafsir section of "al-Jami'" (1/ 60) via Ibn Lahi'ah ← Yazid bin Abi Habib, likewise as "mursal". Details of the narration: However, its closing words are as follows: Umar said to Ubayy: "What prevented you from telling me (earlier)?" Ubayy said: "I was afraid of you (your awe)." Umar said: "That fear was more likely to make you not be among the witnesses of Allah (i.e. my awe should not have prevented you from stating the truth)."
Reference / Source: Abu Ubayd al-Qasim bin Sallam in "Fada'il al-Qur'an" (p. 301), and through him Imam al-Tabari in his "Tafsir" (11/ 8), narrated it from Habib bin al-Shahid and Amr bin Amir al-Ansari as "mursal". Details of the narration: The story is that Umar bin al-Khattab recited the verse of Surah al-Tawbah … reading "al-Ansar" in the nominative (raf') and not attaching the "waw" to (alladhina). At this Zayd bin Thabit (may Allah be pleased with him) corrected him, reciting: ﴿وَالَّذِينَ اتَّبَعُوهُمْ بِإِحْسَانٍ﴾ (with the waw). Umar (repeated his reading): "alladhina ittaba'uhum bi-ihsan". Zayd said (out of courtesy): "The Commander of the Believers knows best." Then Umar said: "Bring me Ubayy bin Ka'b." He asked him about it, and Ubayy also recited: ﴿وَالَّذِينَ اتَّبَعُوهُمْ بِإِحْسَانٍ﴾ (with the waw). Then Umar said: "If so, then yes," and so he followed Ubayy.
