Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 5412

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) that Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) is the best judge among us, and Sayyiduna Ubayy bin Ka'b (may Allah be pleased with him) is the greatest reciter among us. Yet we leave aside some of the things Ubayy says (regarding the Qur'an)," while Ubayy says: "I took it directly from the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), so I will never abandon it," whereas Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, says: "Whatever verse We abrogate or cause to be forgotten." [Surah al-Baqarah: 106]

Grading: (2) Its chain is sahih. Technical note: The narrator "Sufyan" mentioned in the chain is Imam "Sufyan al-Thawri".
Reference / Source: Imam Ahmad (35/ 21084) recorded this hadith from Waki' bin al-Jarrah, and Imam Ahmad (21085), al-Bukhari (4481 and 5005) and al-Nasa'i (10928) via Yahya bin Sa'id al-Qattan; both of them (Waki' and Yahya) narrate it from Sufyan al-Thawri with this same chain. Details of the narration: In Waki''s narration the wording is: "wa inna la-nada'u kathiran min lahni Ubayy" (and we leave much of Ubayy's manner of reading), whereas the wording here is: "wa inna la-nada'u ba'da ma yaqulu Ubayy" (and we leave some of what Ubayy says).
Reference / Source: Imam Ahmad (35/ 21086) recorded a similar narration via al-A'mash, who narrates it from Habib bin Abi Thabit (with this same chain).
