Virtues of Sa'id bin Amir bin Hidhyam (may Allah be pleased with him)

Mus'ab bin Abdullah al-Zubayri said: Sa'id bin Amir bin Hidhyam bin Salaman bin Rabi'ah bin Sa'd bin Jumah (may Allah be pleased with him) was an illustrious Companion. Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) appointed him commander (governor) over some of the army districts of al-Sham, and he died there in the year 20 AH while still in office.

It is narrated from Zayd bin Aslam that Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) asked Sayyiduna Sa'id bin Amir bin Hidhyam (may Allah be pleased with him): Why do the people of al-Sham love you so much? He said: I go on jihad together with them, and I show them sympathy and share with them equally. Then Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) gave him ten thousand (dirhams), but he returned them and said: I have slaves and horses, and I am well off; I want my work to remain a charity for the Muslims (purely for the sake of Allah). Sayyiduna Umar said: Do not do that, for the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) gave me wealth less than this, and I said the same as you are saying; then he (peace and blessings be upon him) said to me: "When Allah gives you wealth that you did not ask for and that your soul did not crave, then take it, for it is provision from Allah that He has granted you."
